Kuyima Whale Camp

Location
San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Set directly on the shores of San Ignacio Lagoon, Kuyima Whale Camp places guests within one of Baja’s most intimate gray whale habitats, where the desert meets tidal flats and the soundscape shifts between wind, water and whale blows offshore. Community-owned and operated through the local ejido, the camp has long been a cornerstone of the region. Nearly the entire staff comes from nearby communities and a long-term partnership with Natural Habitat Adventures is guiding a full refurbishment ahead of the 2027 season while preserving the camp’s low-impact spirit and strong local roots.

Ten new hard-sided cabanas sit directly on the beach, positioned for uninterrupted lagoon views through large windows and sliding glass doors that open onto private porches. Sturdy and well-insulated, cabana interiors feature two twin beds convertible to a king, generous storage and simple natural materials. Private bathrooms include composting toilets and bucket showers designed to minimize water use in this arid landscape. Most of the camp operates on solar power.

Meals and evening talks unfold beneath the main palapa, a large open-air gathering space overlooking the lagoon. Fresh local seafood, handmade tortillas, slow-cooked meats and Baja-style breakfasts anchor the menu between whale-watching excursions. Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the experience, from solar energy and water-conscious infrastructure to community ownership, local employment initiatives and off-season English and hospitality training programs that reinvest directly into San Ignacio’s future.
