Hotel Reykjavík Centrum

Location
Reykjavik, Iceland

Set on Adalstraeti, Reykjavik’s oldest street, this historic hotel sits in the heart of the city’s original Viking settlement, circa 874 AD. The oldest part of the building dates to 1764, while newer sections feature facades inspired by traditional Icelandic townhouses with pitched roofs and painted exteriors. Inside, wood floors, leather seating, soft lighting and contemporary Nordic furniture create a warm, understated atmosphere. A glass-covered atrium fills the center of the hotel with natural light and offers a quiet place to read or relax. The hotel is within easy walking distance of Reykjavik Cathedral, the harbor, Lake Tjornin and the Settlement Exhibition, where Viking-era ruins remain preserved beneath the city streets.

En suite guest rooms reflect the same clean Nordic sensibility, pairing wood furnishings and crisp white linens with blackout curtains that help offset Iceland’s long summer daylight. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee station and electronic safe. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and heated towel racks. A traditional Icelandic breakfast is served in the Uppsalir Bar & Cafe, which also has beer, wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks in the evening. Additional hotel amenities include a compact fitness room with cardio equipment, free weights, yoga mats and stretching space.

The hotel is part of Iceland’s first fully Green Key-certified hotel group, meeting international standards for environmental management, staff training, energy efficiency and waste reduction. Renewable geothermal energy powers heating and hot water throughout the property, while energy-saving lighting and water systems help limit overall consumption. In addition, the hotel has a comprehensive recycling program, reduces single-use plastics, uses environmentally friendly cleaning products and locally sourced food. Staff receive ongoing sustainability training, and the company supports local conservation initiatives and community partnerships tied to Iceland’s natural environment.
