Before Your East Africa Safari, Track Endangered Mountain Gorillas and Sit with Them in Wild Rain Forest Habitat

Before you venture out on the savannas of Kenya and Tanzania, extend your journey into Uganda's mountains for an encounter with  endangered mountain gorillas. Rising from the heart of Africa astride the equator, Uganda's volcanic slopes are one of their last refuges. The rain forests that shroud their slopes also shelter chimpanzees and monkeys, making Uganda the world’s best destination for primate viewing. About 1,063 wild mountain gorillas remain in the world, and Bwindi is home to about 459—a population that is growing, but still threatened by the increasing human population in the surrounding communities. Tracking them through the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the top safari experiences anywhere in Africa. In guided groups of no more than eight travelers, search for one of the habituated gorilla groups that are accustomed to human encounters. Each visit with the gorillas lasts one hour. To come face to face with these powerful yet peaceable wild creatures, so evidently intelligent, is spine-tingling.

Trip Highlights
