Limited to 12 Travelers
A very important feature of our Douro River trip is the limited group size, as kayaking trips are best experienced and safely conducted with a small group of travelers. Also, a small group allows us to experience the intimate hospitality of the small inns and manor houses where we stay.

Moderate to Difficult
Our Portugal kayaking adventure includes five days of flatwater river kayaking at a beginner level. This trip is suitable for those with little to no paddling experience, although you should know in advance that you are physically able to kayak the minimum daily distance, and that you actually enjoy kayaking, before signing on. You must be able to paddle a minimum of 4 hours per day (with breaks) in order to participate. The exact distance we paddle each day will depend on local weather and wind conditions, but participants should expect to paddle for sustained periods of up to two hours at a time. The river is relatively narrow and water is very slow-moving, with little or no current. We will encounter no waves or rapids, though sometimes it can be windy in the river canyons, and we may have to paddle against the wind, which can be more taxing. Please note that during breaks ashore for rest stops and/or a picnic lunch, "using the bathroom" may entail finding a hidden spot in the bushes, as toilet facilities are not always available. Hikes ashore take us through inviting landscapes that frequently include historic sites. Hikes typically last from one to three hours over well-marked easy but hilly terrain, sometimes following a dirt road through the vineyards. You must be able to walk a minimum of one mile to participate in this trip, including the ability to easily navigate stairs.
Important Information About This Trip
We provide highly competent kayaking guides and the very best equipment, to ensure a safe, enjoyable and top-quality paddling adventure. We use stable, well-maintained Prijon rigid single and double sea kayaks ideally designed for this kind of river touring. By using double kayaks, we are able to balance the group with respect to paddling power and ability, in order to facilitate our ability to stay together as a group on the river. (Single kayaks are also available in limited supply for those who prefer.) We also provide all kayaking gear such as paddles, dry bags, unisex flexible-sized life jackets, pumps and sponges. Our guides are thoroughly trained in emergency first-aid techniques and have extensive experience in this environment. Please be aware that weather and river conditions may affect if and for how long we may paddle each day. Though we typically enjoy good weather when we are in Portugal, if conditions are poor and the river surface is rough, we may not paddle as much as we would intend otherwise—but rest assured we will always provide engaging alternate activities should that be the case. Travelers who come with a flexible and adventurous spirit will have the best time, no matter what the local conditions might be.
Since the areas you will travel to on this trip are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for this program. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat Adventures, we require that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We recommend that your chosen independent insurance plan includes at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage. Please note that we will add the cost of Natural Habitat Adventures' medical evacuation policy (currently $48 per person) to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, phone number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
To protect your investment and to provide peace of mind while you travel, we also strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. Plans may cover everything from medical treatment to trip cancellations and delays and lost luggage. Please contact our office if you would like more information about the medical evacuation and comprehensive travel insurance policies we offer by calling 800-543-8917.
