The Great Tanzania Migration Safari

A Deluxe Mobile Tented Safari Across the Serengeti in the Midst of the Herds
On Africa's Great Plains, our mobile camp is a tiny island in a vast, grassy sea. But we are not alone in the wilderness: our camp sits among thousands of wildebeest, and the zebra and gazelle that trail them. Each year, the great herds traverse the Serengeti in search of new grass, and to birth their young. Lion and cheetah lie in wait, finely tuned hunting machines ready to stalk and take down the weakest members of the herds. In the center of the world’s greatest ancient migration route, we are subsumed in a primal spectacle as the drama of predator and prey unfolds before us. Witness it in rare seclusion from our remote private camp, immersed in the wonder of one of the world's truly epic wildlife events.

Trip Highlights

  • A small-group safari to witness the astounding phenomenon of hundreds of thousands of animals massed on the Serengeti Plains, during prime calving season
  • Our expert safari Expedition Leader interprets predator-prey interactions as big felines track the young and vulnerable members of the herds
  • Enjoy unparalleled seclusion, comfort and vintage safari atmosphere at our private Natural Habitat Migration Base Camp, located in a remote sector of the Serengeti
Don't Choose Just Any Migration Safari...
No wildlife event on the planet rivals Africa’s Great Migration for sheer drama. Twice each year the huge herds make a great circuit across the Serengeti Plains, following the grass that sprouts with the seasonal rains. To witness the migration is on many a wildlife lover’s bucket list. But it’s crucial to choose the right way to experience this phenomenon – because all Tanzania migration safaris are not the same! Here’s what makes ours better:
  1. An Itinerary Designed for Optimal Migration Viewing
Many companies operate the same cookie-cutter “migration” tour year-round, driving the entire northern circuit of Tanzania with no care taken to be in a particular place at a time that jibes with the arrival of the herds. We focus on the best time to see the animals, then build our safari itinerary and dates around that. Specifically, we spend three days during peak migration season in the southern Serengeti, where over a million wildebeest drop their young on the plains every year, attracting predators for a remarkable nature experience. You’re coming to see Tanzania's greatest wildlife event, and our vast experience allows us the best chance to fulfill your expectations!
  2. We're Involved from Beginning to End!
The vast majority of African safaris sold are outsourced to distant operators who handle a stream of new guests every day. In contrast, we construct every component of your safari, then ensure that you are personally guided from start to finish by Nat Hab's highly trained Safari Expedition Leaders, so our guests can have the utmost confidence in the quality and safety of our operations. Our oversight is meticulous, because our reputation depends on your safari’s success!
  3. Fly Both Ways from the Bush
Many companies drive you to and from the Serengeti, a trip that can take 6-8 hours one way over often rugged roads. We fly you in and out, meeting our vehicles and guides in the bush, to maximize time for what you’ve come to Africa for: watching wildlife on safari!
  4. Remote Private Camps for Wildlife Proximity
Rather than using crowded lodges where vehicles depart each morning in large numbers, often surrounding the same wildlife all at once, we insist on the smallest luxury bush camps located in remote spots where wildlife is prolific. Natural Habitat's Migration Base Camp and Naimiri Plains Camp allow us the flexibility to pursue wildlife where concentrations are greatest, rather than utilizing larger accommodations that are nowhere near the migration.
  5. Small Groups for Intimate Wildlife Encounters
A small group is essential for optimal wildlife viewing. We generally have the smallest group sizes in the safari industry, though we take a maximum of approximately 12 on this trip, divided into several vehicles in order to spread out within radio contact to track the migrating animals. Small groups mean we get closer to the herds, get better photos, and enjoy more personalized interaction with our Expedition Leader.
  6. A Window Seat for Every Traveler
We guarantee a window seat for every guest. Whereas many safari operators use crowded mini-buses, and even luxury operators often utilize every seat, including middles, we know how important unimpeded views are when you've come all this way to see and photograph the migration. That's why we split our group into separate vehicles, each guest with a guaranteed window seat.
  7. Secluded Location Allows for Exclusive Activities
While most groups visit only the most central and busiest parts of Serengeti National Park, we stay in a newly opened area of the park in the east-central Serengeti region known as the Namiri Plains where travelers are few, though feline predators are abundant! Here, we do traditional wildlife drives, but we can also go on guided walking safaris and learn about local researchers studying the cats in this area.
  8. Carry More Luggage
Most airlines and safari companies in East Africa strictly limit luggage to 33 pounds per guest, including carry-on bags, with even the highest priced trips having this limitation. We have arranged a special luggage allowance of 44 pounds per guest, making it easier to carry camera equipment and travel more comfortably without leaving behind the essential items you need.
  9. The World's Finest Safari Guides
Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the finest naturalists on the planet! In Tanzania, rather than using less qualified local camp guides or an inexperienced guide as a trip escort, our NHA Safari Expedition Leaders are the most highly trained guides in Africa, renowned for providing exceptional service. With you from beginning to end, our Expedition Leaders average approximately 15 years' guiding experience. Their training is further enhanced by the resources of WWF’s premier scientists. See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.

Natural Habitat Adventures offers an exclusive guarantee, which states that we will meet the lofty expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
