Location of Adventure
Zambia, Southern Africa
Group Size Limit
Approximately 6 Travelers
A very important feature of our Zambia safari is the limited group size, as safaris are best experienced with fewer travelers in order to enhance intimate encounters with nature and wildlife.
Our Specialized 4x4 Land Rovers and Land Cruisers
We use open 4x4 Land Rovers or Land Cruisers with a custom suspension system and an open-top, open-sided, tiered seating arrangement designed to maximize wildlife viewing and comfort. Each vehicle has 10 cushioned passenger seats, one in front next to the driver followed by three rows of three seats each, though we limit our capacity to just six travelers. Each row is raised slightly higher than the one in front of it, allowing for unobstructed views of scenery and wildlife. A mini-fridge stocked with cold drinks and a small library with reference books and field guides enhance our wildlife drives. Each custom-built vehicle sports front bull bars and runner boards and carries a full recovery kit, including spare tires and a high lift jack. Vehicles are updated or replaced as needed and meticulously maintained to provide our guests an unmatched safari experience.
Our Private Leaders
Internal scheduled flights, accommodations, hot air balloon excursion in Busanga Plains, airport transfers on Day 1 and final day, all meals from dinner on Day 1 through breakfast on final day, non-alcoholic drinks at camps and in vehicles, house alcoholic beverages in camps, services of NHA’s professional Expedition Leaders, local guides and lodge staff, all permits, entrance fees and taxes.
Not Included
Travel to and from start and end point of trip, premium alcoholic beverages, some gratuities, passport and visa fees, optional activities, items of a personal nature (phone calls, souvenirs, etc.), airline baggage fees, airport and departure taxes, optional travel insurance, and required medical evacuation insurance.
Physical Requirements
Easy to Moderate
There is no strenuous activity involved during this safari, though a safari vehicle frequently offers a bumpy ride. Wildlife drives often involve long hours of sitting and sometimes bouncing around. While we don't consider this strenuous, it can be uncomfortable and pose a particular type of physical demand on the body. All travelers must be able to climb into and out of the raised 4x4 trucks that we use for safari vehicles. Safari accommodations and vehicles are not heated and several of our adventures take place during the winter months in Africa, so it is critical that travelers come prepared. They must also be able to walk to and from the vehicle to our camp accommodations, which sometimes involves walking over uneven ground or on boardwalks. Additionally, while all walks are considered optional, walking is considered one of the best ways to see the South Luangwa Valley, and you will get the most out of your safari experience if you can walk a mile or two over uneven ground without assistance. Walking excursions to view wildlife may include short, casual walks as well as longer, physically demanding walks, depending on the ability and preferences of the group. Longer walks may be led by a local guide, as NHA Expedition Leaders typically stay with the slower members of the group. We recommend that all travelers have an adventurous spirit, as they will often enjoy the closest animal encounters.
Important Information About This Trip
Zambia’s Luangwa Valley is the birthplace of the traditional walking safari. We explore the park’s depths both on foot and by 4x4 vehicle for a comprehensive study of its undulating hills, seasonal floodplains, ebony forests and rushing rivers. Then, continue to remote and rarely explored Kafue National Park. Our itinerary features small private camps along the Luangwa River and Busanga Plains for a sense of the Africa of yesteryear. We enjoy the company of two different Expedition Leaders during this trip, each with special regional expertise—one in South Luangwa and one in Kafue and Victoria Falls.
Mandatory Insurance
Since the areas we travel to on this trip are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for our guests' safety. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat, we request that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We will add the cost of a medical evacuation policy to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, contact number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
Getting There & Getting Home
