Viva Mexico! Celebrating Wildlife South of the Border
September 16 is Mexican Independence Day, marking the anniversary of the country’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810. And what better way to honor Mexico’s identity and vitality than with a webinar focused on its most emblematic wildlife species, a source of national pride? Annie Van Dinther hosts Mexican conservation researcher and Expedition Leader Lilia Gonzalez for an in-depth look at the country’s beautiful biodiversity. It’s estimated that more than 10% of all the world’s flora and fauna species are found in Mexico! From native and endemic species to exotic interlopers and seasonal visitors, Mexico’s wildlife wonders are wildly wide-ranging. And it’s no surprise, given the tremendous variation in geography and habitats Mexico comprises. Gray whales, humpback whales and monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico annually, while other creatures are found only here, like the critically endangered vaquita porpoise—fewer than 30 are left. Learn about these, sea turtles, jaguars and more, many of which are the focus of WWF and Mexican government conservation programs. You’ll come away with a fuller understanding of which wild animals you are likely to see where...and inspiration for your future Mexico travel adventures!
