Rewilding the Alps: The Return of Europe’s Elusive Carnivores
The jagged heights of the Swiss Alps have been a source of natural wonder for people around the world for generations, and they once supported abundant large wildlife. But ever-expanding development in the form of cities, farming and industry has led to the elimination of alpine carnivores like the wolf, lynx, brown bear and bearded vulture throughout Switzerland’s mountains. Recently, however, we are witnessing a local, national and international push to return these charismatic animals to landscapes that have not seen them for hundreds of years. Expedition Leader Eddy Savage shares conservation success stories from Switzerland over the last 50 years, giving us a glimpse into what it means to restore the wild in the heart of Europe.
