Let’s Go: Discover Arctic Trails as We Follow Arctic Tails
Humans have a long history of working alongside other species to survive in wild habitats, with perhaps no relationship more common nor better established than the one with “man’s best friend”—the domesticated dog. When we collaborate with dogs as part of our shared natural ecosystem, people can adapt to even the harshest environments, such as the extremely cold conditions of the Arctic. Join Expedition Leader Kristina Disney for an in-depth look at the role of sled dogs in Alaska and the Canadian North as she presents a more accurate depiction than the frequently over-romanticized view of dog sledding in popular culture. Kristina shares stories from her time in the Yukon training sled dogs for the famous Iditarod race, including her third time ever on a dog sled: a 100-mile race! Learn about the unique metabolic and other adaptations that huskies share with wolves and other northern species such as the polar bear and Arctic fox, as we gain insight into the evolution of Arctic species. Kristina will also share how you can experience the excitement of an authentic dog sled ride through the boreal forest outside Churchill, Manitoba, as part of a Nat Hab polar bear adventure in Canada.
