At the base of the Himalayas and wedged between two river systems, Chitwan National Park is the last undisturbed vestige of the ‘Terai’ region, the vast subtropical lowlands that once extended across the foothills of India and Nepal. Impressively rich in diverse flora and fauna, it shelters some of the planet’s last one-horned Asiatic rhinoceros, endangered Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, monkeys and some 350 bird species. Chitwan was Nepal’s first national park, established in 1973. It was later proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, recognizing the global value of this ecosystem where varied climatic and topographic conditions have maximized biodiversity across the landscape. Here to introduce it with host Annie Van Dinther is Expedition Leader and wildlife conservation expert Arpita Dutta. Arpita is passionate about this true jungle wilderness which nature explorers can experience by jeep safari, silent canoe and forest walks revealing a multitude of wildlife surprises. Learn how Chitwan became a global model for conservation, reflecting successful efforts to protect it as one of WWF’s Global 200 ecoregions and a Conservation International biodiversity hotspot.
