You’ve heard of Africa’s Great Migration, the annual trek of more than 2 million wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara and back. But did you know there is also an important – and growing –yearly migration of mostly zebra and wildebeest down south in Botswana? The animals’ movement from the Okavango Delta to the Makgadikgadi salt pans, is one of the longest migrations in Africa. And South African Expedition Leader Russell Gerber is with us to tell you all about it. Few people are aware of this major phenomenon, which is being driven by climate change. And among those who are – including researchers – this mass movement of animals in Botwana is not well understood, though it is a critical event in the region. Russell, a zoologist and seasoned safari guide since 2004, reveals what’s behind the migration and why it matters.
