Beyond the Great Migration: African Animals on the Move
When you hear the words "migration" and "Africa,” you no doubt think of the Great Migration, in which some 2 million wildebeest move in an annual circuit throughout the Serengeti/Mara ecosystem in pursuit of fresh grass. Yet this stunning phenomenon is just one migration that occurs on the continent. There are others, too, less well known but equally fascinating, and Expedition Leader Matt Meyer is here to tell us about some of them. Some of these migrations cover longer distances, and some involve even more animals! Learn about the zebra migration from northern to southeastern Botswana into the stark landscape of the Makgadikgadi salt pans (what attracts them there??)…and the mind-boggling sardine run off South Africa, when billions of fish cause a feeding frenzy along the coast. Researchers estimate the run has enough biomass to equal East Africa’s wildebeest migration! Yet warming seas threaten the phenomenon, which has not occurred during a couple of seasons when the water temperature rose to 70F or above. Learn about the ecological importance of these and other migratory events and efforts being made to conserve them.
