Jean Lawrence

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest gave Jean ample opportunities to connect and play in the great outdoors. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University, Jean pursued a career that reflected her love of the natural world. She worked as an interpretive ranger at Grand Teton National Park and later completed a master’s degree in zoology and physiology from the University of Wyoming. Jean’s passion for conservation biology led her to work for the National Park Service and United States Forest Service as a field biologist focusing on threatened and endangered species, including the California condor, Southwestern willow flycatcher, Mexican spotted owl and Colorado River cutthroat trout. She has managed the California Condor Project at Grand Canyon National Park, and currently conducts grouse and raptor surveys in the spring for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. She also participates in Audubon and Hawk Watch International bird counts throughout the year. A Nat Hab Expedition Leader since 2016, Jean continues to enjoy exploring and sharing the wonders of Yellowstone, the canyon country of the Southwest, Glacier National Park and Churchill, Canada.

Praise from Nat Hab travelers:

V. Harris

"Jean was as good or better than any wildlife guide I have ever been privileged to travel with. Her knowledge, professionalism and personability were top of the line. She ALWAYS was on the lookout for ways to make the trip more enjoyable and safer. I cannot recommend her highly enough!"

R. Zamarin
"Jean was terrific. She was attuned to each group member's needs and interests and attended to them quietly and effectively. Her knowledge and enthusiasm joined with her great personality made her a joy to have as our Expedition Leader."

S. Banks

"Jean was a pleasure on all levels. As was expected, she was exceedingly knowledgeable, kind and thoughtful, and always showed a sunny disposition. She is a delight."

S. Ponsford

"Jean and Mike were both excellent. Their knowledge of the wildlife we saw, the flora and the special geothermal features of the area was truly amazing. They also knew the areas where we might find specific species. They were both more than pleasant and fun to be around. We could not have asked for anything more from them. We went to see wildlife, and we definitely achieved that goal thanks to our excellent guides. We would have been pleased to see anything, but I was hoping to see grizzly bears and wolves. We saw both. We especially liked that Mike and Jean were never in a rush to move on to something else. You learn so much about wildlife by simply observing them. We truly appreciated the respect the guides showed for the wildlife by maintaining our distance, keeping quiet, etc."

L. Landau
"Jean was fabulous. She has such a great personality and demeanor. She was fun to be around and was easily able to deal with the varied personalities of our group members. She is knowledgeable about the area, the polar bears and the people of the area. It felt like traveling with a trusted friend. A+++++."

E. Roberts
"Jean was extremely professional and unbelievably courteous. Her communication style was excellent, insuring that everyone knew exactly what was going on."
