Due to misplaced fears for livestock and local beliefs about these large birds carrying children away, they were extirpated from Switzerland in the late 1800s.
Starting in 1986 an international project began to reintroduce the bearded vulture into areas throughout Europe. Swiss National Park has spearheaded efforts to reintroduce bearded vultures in Switzerland and has celebrated some success, but the future of these birds in the country remains uncertain.
