Robert earned his bachelor's degree in Creative Writing with a minor in German Literature from Oberlin College in Ohio. When he returned to Alaska after college, he took a temporary job working as an assistant teacher in a nonprofit Montessori preschool. That morphed into a 17-year career as Montessori school teacher and later, executive director of the school. During that time, Robert met his wife, Claudia. They had two children, both of whom are now working adults.
Since teaching was seasonal for many years, Robert took a summer job guiding tours up the Dalton Highway with Northern Alaska Tour Company—which he has continued doing off and on since 1998. Nowadays, he spends much of his time training guides, putting together guide schedules, working on creating new tours, and organizing special events such as the annual Dalton Highway garbage clean-up tours.
Robert has considered himself a birder for many years, but his main hobby now is photographing insects. He believes that there is a huge world of tiny wildlife out there that most people overlook, and that by capturing these creatures on camera, we can get incredible details we were never able to see before.
Observing and learning about the natural world is hugely rewarding for Robert, and he is excited to share his knowledge of nature with our guests!
