Matt Turner

From an early age, Matt was fascinated with the natural world. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and living in the Bay Area for much of his childhood, he made a life-changing decision to attend high school in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. The region’s distinctive geology, climate, flora and fauna further stimulated his interest in studying the natural sciences. He has remained in the region for the past 30 years and currently resides in Prescott, AZ.

After obtaining a degree in natural history from Prescott College, Matt worked as a field biologist and ecological/rangeland consultant for numerous federal agencies and private entities. A big proponent for land conservation, Matt also works for a land trust, providing expertise in conservation easements and other land protection tools.

In the early 1990s, Matt began working as a river and backcountry guide. He shifted to being a naturalist guide and over the years, he has led countless individuals throughout the Southwest while imparting a unique perspective of the region’s exceptional natural environment. Drawing on this extensive experience, Matt helps introduce Nat Hab guests to the spectacular gems hidden amid the canyons of the Southwest.

Praise from Nat Hab travelers:

P. Teillon

"Matt's professionalism in all areas (knowledge of the geology, botany and zoology of the region; patience and competence managing guests and the daily schedules) was exceptional. He made our trip a memorable experience."

A. Najberg
"Matt and Fred were absolutely awesome. Their knowledge was impressive, they had a great sense of adventure, their attitude was professional and fun, and combined, I believe they made a great team of leaders for our group. A++ in my book to both! I miss them already."

J. McDonough
"Matt went out of his way to make the trip special and taught us a lot about the geology of the canyons. We have been so impressed with the quality of your guides. This was our second Nat Hab photo trip and we are ready for more. The model of small groups, skilled guides and the road less traveled works for us."

J. Wilkin
"Matt and Jean are both absolutely phenomenal. They are both super knowledgeable and extremely passionate about wildlife and geology. I absolutely loved them both and am inspired to continue learning more."

E. Plimpton
"Our Expedition Leader made this experience absolutely unforgettable. We got so much more out of the experience than even the magnificent canyons could have offered. Matt's amazing range of knowledge about the geology, animals, plants and cultural history of the area provided us with fascinating information about everything we saw. It made us feel that we had gained intimate knowledge of every one of the magnificent sites we visited. He arranged treats we never expected, such as lovely catered picnics in beautiful surroundings. He took wonderful care of us and certainly made sure that everyone was safe and happy."

L. Elliott
"Matt is an exceptionally good guide. The depth and breadth of his knowledge of geology, plants, birds and the Southwest canyons area are remarkable, and he's a very good presenter of information. I thought that he also did a good job of giving attention to all of us. There were people who really wanted his help with photography as well as with bird identification, and he seemed to go out of his way to share what he knew. He managed all the logistics and the responsibilities of his role skillfully. He also has a great sense of humor and made the trip fun and entertaining. The surprises and special birthday celebration for one of the participants were fun and sweet."
