This Scandinavian kingdom atop Europe holds more than its share of natural spectacles. Deep fjords penetrate the wall of mountains along Norway’s ragged coast—sapphire inlets flanked by vertical peaks. Waterfalls pour in silver ribbons, joining rivers that flow from glaciers into lush valleys. Seals and whales play in the Norwegian Sea while millions of seabirds nest on a maze of islands. Our singular Norway adventure presents a diverse nature sampler on an itinerary that eludes the most heavily touristed routes. Hear legends of Vikings and trolls as we travel from the Atlantic edge to central Norway’s wild interior, climbing the famous Trollstigen road and following the Rauma River into some of Europe's most daunting mountaineering terrain. Inland, hike forest trails across highland fjells and pursue herds of wild musk ox that roam the tundra.
Explore Unspoiled HjorundfjordEscape the crowds on a private boat trip up a 'secret' fjord off-limits to big cruise ships, surrounded by the peaks of the Sunnmore Alps
Private Sea Safari Among Marine LifeAboard a high-speed Zodiac, visit Grasoyane seal colony and Runde Island, where half a million seabirds nest, including puffins in season
Trek in Search of Wild Musk OxIn the rugged interior of Central Norway, hike over tundra in search of musk ox in Dovrefjell National Park, well off the typical tourist track
Like many beautiful places on our planet, Norway has seen an uptick in tourism in recent years. More travelers are discovering its stunning fjords and peaks, often arriving on ever more (and bigger) cruise ships. That's why we set out to offer you a quieter (though no less spectacular) experience of Norway. Read more about what sets our trip apart:
Travel with Just 12 Guests & Two Guides
A small group is key to an intimate experience of nature. Led by a Nat Hab Expedition Leader and a local guide who adds an insider perspective that only a native Norwegian can provide, you’ll get exceptional personal attention—and we can divide into even smaller groups for excursions at different physical ability levels.
Explore Less-Traveled Highlights for a More Authentic Experience
The fact is, coastal Norway has become very popular as a cruise ship destination. In places like Bergen and Geirangerfjord, thousands of visitors pour off giant vessels, and any sense of quiet wonder in nature is quickly vanquished. That's why we've crafted an itinerary that takes you largely away from the most heavily visited spots. Big cruise ships are banned from Hjorundfjord in summer, allowing us to kayak and explore in peace. Few travelers go inland to Dovrefjell National Park, where we search for musk ox. And some of the tallest waterfalls in the world are in a place that very Norway travelers get to—but you will!
Enjoy Distinctive Small Hotels
From a historic mountain inn along a 12th-century pilgrimage route (with a sod top "mowed" by a goat) to a sophisticated boutique hotel on the old Alesund harborfront that harks back to its early 20th-century heritage as a fish-packing warehouse, we enhance your adventure with unique and interesting places to stay.
Safari in Search of Wild Musk Ox
No other itinerary we know of gets you deep into Dovrefjell National Park in search of the shaggy musk ox, one of the Arctic's oldest and hardiest native creatures. Their fine underbelly fur, called qiviut, is softer than cashmere and much warmer than wool, and garments knitted from it are highly coveted. We hike on foot to find the herd, possibly glimpsing other local wildlife, too, such as reindeer or Arctic fox.
