Location of Adventure
Group Size Limit
A very important feature of our Sri Lankan safari is the limited group size, as nature tours are best experienced with a small group of travelers.
Specialized 4x4 Land Rovers and Land Cruisers
Our Private Leaders
Arrival and departure airport transfers (if you are staying at the Jetwing Lagoon or Taj Samudra hotels), accommodations, meals from dinner Day 1 to breakfast final day, drinking water throughout the trip and soft drinks at meals, services of an NHA Expedition Leader, local guides and lodge staff, most gratuities, still camera fees in all parks, all permits, entrance fees and taxes.
Travel to and from start and end points of trip (Colombo, Sri Lanka), early arrival and late departure airport transfers (if you are not staying at the Jetwing Lagoon or Taj Samudra hotels), alcoholic beverages, passport and visa fees, some gratuities, optional activities, items of a personal nature (phone calls, souvenirs, Internet, etc.), airline baggage fees, required medical evacuation insurance and optional travel insurance.
Travelers must be able to walk unassisted for at least two miles over uneven terrain, climb stairs at some accommodations, and climb a short ladder to get in and out of our safari vehicles, all in potentially hot and humid conditions, in order to participate in this trip. Activities include walking tours that could be as long as three miles in length and walking on sometimes dark and uneven paths at our accommodations; some walks will take place in areas situated between 6,000 and 7,500 feet in elevation. If you wish to climb to the top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress (not required), there are approximately 1,200 steps to navigate. Wildlife drives in the parks take place on rough and bumpy dirt roads with many ruts and potholes, in conditions that are potentially extremely dusty. Travelers with back problems or other health issues that could be exacerbated by such conditions should take this into consideration. The trip also involves many very early morning starts and long, full days of activities with little down time. Some drives between locations are long (5-6 hours) and can occur amid chaotic local driving conditions.
Important Information About This Trip
Our Exploratory Adventures are inaugural trips to new destinations for a select small group of travelers. In our quest to continually offer fresh and exhilarating nature experiences, these first-time adventures offer an extra element of discovery (and often include surprises of which we are unaware). Travelers on these departures must be willing to “go with the flow” and expect the unexpected. If you have an exploratory spirit and are open to potential changes in schedules, itinerary, activities or accommodations as your trip unfolds, you may enjoy this opportunity to be among the very first Nat Hab guests to pioneer a new trip with us.
In addition, most of our guests travel to Sri Lanka for encounters with the country’s unique wildlife. While the nature experiences here are indeed remarkable, there is a fundamental difference between the wildlife experience in Sri Lankan habitats and that found in Africa. At times, guests that are lured to Sri Lanka by tourist brochures can be disappointed to see fewer animals than they expected, or at least fewer than they might normally see in Africa. It is not that the surviving jungles are thinly populated, but, similar to places like Costa Rica where the forest is thick with vegetation, the creatures have mastered the art of camouflage and deception and can be extremely difficult to spot. At Nat Hab we design our itineraries to capitalize on the best areas to spot wildlife. But various factors can affect potential sightings, including inclement weather, which creates small pockets of water that allow the animals to remain hidden in the forest. There is no doubt that natural Sri Lanka awaits discovery. The secret for visitors lies in the assistance of expert guides, as well as knowing what to expect and in understanding that the privilege of stepping into a pure and untouched world is a reward in itself.
Since the areas we travel to on this extension are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for this program. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat, we require that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We recommend that your chosen independent insurance plan includes at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage. Please note that we will add the cost of Natural Habitat’s medical evacuation policy to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, phone number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
To protect your investment and to provide peace of mind while you travel, we also strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. Plans may cover everything from medical treatment to trip cancellations and delays, to lost luggage. Please contact our office if you would like more information about the medical evacuation or comprehensive travel insurance policies we offer through Travelex by calling 800-543-8917.
