Mweya Lodge
Location
Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Mweya Lodge enjoys an unsurpassed location atop a peninsula jutting into Kazinga Channel, the waterway at the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Every room overlooks the channel, which boasts the world’s largest concentration of hippos. Guests also enjoy magnificent views of Lakes George and Edward, not to mention wild forest hogs grazing just outside the windows and an abundance of colorful local birds. The volcanoes of the Rwenzori Range, the famed “Mountains of the Moon," rise in the distance. With 54 en suite rooms, Mweya is a larger lodge than we typically use on our safaris, but we've chosen it for its outstanding location directly on the Kazinga Channel. The lodge welcomes guests into a dramatic high-ceilinged lobby, and interiors incorporate thatch, stucco and terracotta tile. Enjoy drinks in the classic safari ambience of the Tembo Bar, and meals in the formal dining room or on the veranda, with views that will surely distract from dinner! Swim in the infinity pool as you identify animals cooling off in the channel below. A health club and spa offer a range of facilities, including sauna, steam bath and relaxing treatments.

Kyambura Game Lodge
Location
Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Kyambura Lodge sits adjacent to Kyambura Gorge on the eastern edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. In a previous era, this site on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley housed a coffee cooperative surrounded by plantations and subsistence farms. Today, Kyambura Lodge is one of the area’s premier safari bases. Seven cottages built of natural materials are tucked discreetly into a mountainside, blending with the wild environs. Each offers exceptional privacy and a slate of comforts, with large, log-pole beds, en suite bush 'showers with a view,' hot and cold running water, 220v electricity and a private wooden balcony with panoramic vistas across the park’s vast expanse and Rwenzori Mountains beyond. Drawing inspiration from the innovative approaches to life in 'everyday' Africa, Kyambura Lodge celebrates the vibrancy and resourcefulness of 'up-cycled' design (the re-use of found/discarded objects in a way not originally intended) incorporated by local craftsmen. A swimming pool sits next to the communal campfire where traditional dances are often performed by the local Banyaruguru troupe. The restaurant and lounge open onto a sundowner deck overlooking the park, for mellow relaxation after the day’s activities. The friendly, professionally trained kitchen staff serves multi-course meals featuring international and local cuisine. Organic vegetables from the lodge garden are a highlight.

Jacana Lodge
Location
Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda

Located on the shores of Lake Nyamasingiri, Jacana’s 10 unique chalets are tucked into the dense foliage of the Maramagambo Forest. Each has an enclosed private veranda with expansive windows for panoramic views of the lake. Enjoy your morning tea or coffee here, delivered by your personal waiter. All chalets have en-suite facilities and hot water showers. In keeping with the creative design of the lodge, each chalet is individually decorated with furnishings that evoke the natural environs. The dining room, bar and lounge have magnificent views overlooking the lake, as does the lakeside swimming pool with sauna. The Virunga Lounge is centered on a large stone fireplace with comfortable sofas, an inviting place to rest and recount the day’s adventures. As a fire crackles and the night sounds of the forest emerge along with the stars, sit back and savor the delights of the African bush, here in abundance at Jacana Lodge.
