Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge
Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia
The 4-star Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, surrounded by the lush coastal flora of Eastern Cove, sits on seven acres of natural bushland, four of which are committed to the preservation of native vegetation. Wildlife thrives in this secluded location overlooking American River Bay, with Tammar wallabies, brush-tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australia pelicans and rare glossy black-cockatoos are often spotted on the property. All 38 air-conditioned, natural-light-filled rooms have sea or pool views and come with a private balcony or patio ideal for birdwatching. Rooms have a modern vibe with warm wood accents and are furnished with a king-size bed that can be converted to two singles, plus a comfortable chair and a writing desk for those who may want to journal the day’s adventures. Rooms also have a flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Guests can enjoy the saltwater pool and a nature trail on the premises, and if time permits, also participate in the morning pelican feeding with fish scraps from the restaurant.
Reflections, the lodge restaurant, is a Trip Advisor Travelers' Choice award winner. Meals are served indoors and al fresco, showcasing local and organic ingredients such as the famous island honey from the purest strain of Ligurian bees in the world, American River oysters, Kangaroo Island eggs and regionally made chorizo. There are plenty of plant-based options as well, including breakfast choices of Kangaroo Island granola with local fruit or smashed avocado on homemade sourdough, accented with garnishes from the lodge's herb and edible flower garden. Choose a glass of Kangaroo Island wine with dinner, followed by a nocturnal walk around the property—the lodge provides flashlights, and it is common to cross paths with wallabies.
Kangaroo Island Lodge takes pride in its environmental consciousness, reflected in its use of solar power, rainwater storage, food scrap composting and vermiculture.
