Yellowstone Winter Photo Expedition

Capture Awe-Inspiring Scenery and Wildlife Images in the Silent Grandeur of Winter
Discover the phenomenal photography opportunities of Yellowstone’s quiet season, during the heart of winter when wildlife is more plentiful than people. Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks contain the largest concentration of free-roaming wildlife in the Lower 48, a nature photographer’s grail. Shaggy bison forage for food, their coats rimmed in frost, nostrils creating steam clouds in the frozen air. Elk congregate in vast herds. In the remote reaches of the Lamar Valley we search for wolves, hoping to silently snap the stealthy predators as they move through the powder in the distance. This all-encompassing nature adventure promises exquisite rewards for photographers!

Trip Highlights

  • Track the wolves of Yellowstone as you pursue photos of the park's most charismatic and elusive predator, and capture images of a multitude of other wildlife
  • Travel via private chartered snowcoach with unparalleled access to Yellowstone’s best winter wildlife viewing, plus scenes of snow-mantled peaks, frozen waterfalls and steaming geysers
  • Shoot alongside a renowned local wildlife photographer who will enhance and inspire your experience with insights, tips and expertise
Yellowstone's Ultimate Wolf & Wildlife Photography Opportunity
In Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, tremendous natural forces and elements come together to create a spectacular backdrop for wildlife and nature photography, especially in winter with the play of light on a frosty white canvas. While most outfitters offer short partial-day trips through a limited section of the parks, our comprehensive winter journey includes not only Yellowstone and the Tetons, but the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, too, among other photogenic locations. Our guide is a professional photographer and a seasoned naturalist. And because we travel with such a small group, you won't find a more personalized and immersive experience. Read more about what sets our photo expedition apart!
  1. Explore Areas of the National Parks that Most Visitors Miss
Our winter photography expedition was developed specifically for those who want to capture images of the region’s wildlife and iconic landscapes. Our long history of operating in Yellowstone means you’ll benefit from our decades of experience in knowing where the best wildlife photography opportunities lie. You’ll explore areas of the parks that independent travelers and guests aboard standard bus tours will certainly never see.
  2. Small Groups for the Most Intimate Wildlife Encounters
Our group of approximately 12 guests is further divided into two smaller groups in two vehicles, each with an Expedition Leader, for the quietest experience of nature with less impact. Traveling with fewer people also allows us to move quickly to areas where wolves have most recently been spotted and to observe them without disturbing them.
  3. Custom-Outfitted Vehicles Built for Wildlife Viewing
We cannot overstate the importance of our customized safari vehicles for enhancing your wildlife photography opportunities. Unlike other companies that rely on standard small buses for commercial group travel, we use safari-style vehicles designed especially for wildlife viewing, with roof hatches and large side windows that slide all the way open to enhance your perspective and access for photos. Plus, since we purposely don’t fill our vehicles to capacity, we have plenty of room for gear, and everyone gets a window seat. Our snowcoaches, likewise, are a cut above others': the historic Bombardiers we use are the most reliable and fuel-efficient snowcoaches available in the park—and they have roof hatches that facilitate wildlife photography from inside the vehicle! Other snowcoaches require you to step outside to get photos unimpeded by glass windows.
  4. Our Guides are Professional Naturalists, Photographers and Educators
You simply won't find more impressive guides for your Yellowstone photography adventure. Our Expedition Leaders are naturalists and photographers, with in-depth knowledge of the places we visit and their resident wildlife. Our guides are in constant communication with local wolf researchers, allowing our small group to have the most up-to-date, insider knowledge of wolf locations and activities. Our Yellowstone Photo Expedition Leaders have been guiding in this region for an average of eight years, and they receive additional training and resources from WWF’s top scientists. We can proudly state that they are the guides called upon to train and teach other local guides. See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  5. Meet a Renowned Local Wildlife Photographer Who Joins Us in the Field
Drawing on our years of experience in the area, we've arranged personal time with one of the country's premier wolf photographers. We'll visit the home and gallery of famed local naturalist/photographer Dan Hartman, who also joins us for an outing in the Lamar Valley where we’ll have our best chance to see wolves in their natural environment. Renowned for his amazing wolf images, Dan is at your side to share tips on how to capture the best shots of these often-elusive animals, including how to use your telephoto lens to its best advantage.
  6. Stay Within the Park at Old Faithful Snow Lodge
Among other accommodations specially selected for close proximity to wildlife, we include the special opportunity to stay in the heart of Yellowstone National Park in winter at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Inaccessible to cars once winter snows block the road, we’ll get you there via historic Bombardier snowcoaches.
  7. Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Outstanding Photography Tour
When you travel with Natural Habitat Adventures, you get our exclusive guarantee that states that we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  8. Feel Good About the Way You Travel
We all care about the planet, and you can travel with us knowing that the emissions from your trip are 100 percent carbon-offset. Natural Habitat Adventures is the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company, a feature that is especially critical when considering that wildlife and their habitats are under substantial threat from our planet’s warming temperatures.

Because of our commitment to environmentally friendly travel, as well as the exceptional quality of our small-group nature adventures, World Wildlife Fund, the world’s leading environmental conservation organization, has named Natural Habitat its worldwide travel partner — a designation that makes us exceedingly proud!
