We Support The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

East Africa is a leader in successful conservation projects that have been replicated throughout Africa, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the most prominent – and one that we have been proud to support since 2001.

Helping to save the lives of orphaned elephants and rhinos that are ultimately released back into the wild is just one of the many wildlife commitments the Sheldrick Trust is involved in. The Trust runs seven full time de-snaring teams, two mobile veterinary units, and is active in community outreach and numerous educational programs.

One of the most successful Sheldrick projects, extremely popular with Natural Habitat Safaris’ clients, is the baby elephant orphanage on the edge of Nairobi National Park. Due to poaching, drought and human encroachment, baby elephants are often left without parents. Many are rescued and hand-reared back to health by the Trust, then gradually rehabilitated back into the wild elephant community of Tsavo National Park.

How We Help

  • The Orphan’s Project exists through donations from individuals and organisations, particularly support provided via the Trust’s Fostering Programme. Natural Habitat Safaris currently fosters 10 baby elephants, which our team visit on a regular basis. Each baby elephant is fostered at a cost of $US50 per year, for a corporate donation of $500 per annum.
  • Our guests can also foster an elephant individually for as little as US$50 per year. And when on safari, they can make a personal visit to the elephant orphanage in Nairobi to meet and interact with their own baby elephant.
  • Our guests contribute to the Trust through general admission visits, which may be an option at the start or end of a safari. Each visitor pays a $7 entry fee, which includes a presentation by the head keeper and a chance to watch the elephants play and interact. We also facilitate private group tours with sufficient interest, for an average annual contribution of $4,000.
  • Natural Habitat Safaris can create a custom safari itinerary that includes a stay at Ithumba Camp in Tsavo National Park, which is run by the Trust and boasts one of the elephant release sites — a heartwarming and truly interactive experience for the whole family.
