Churchill is a pilgrimage for wildlife photographers yearning to capture close-up images of polar bears...and this custom photo adventure puts you in the very best spot to get those shots! From the Tundra Lodge, situated outside town on the open tundra, photograph bears from our unique "rolling hotel." Outdoor observation decks grant intimate access to the bears, which often approach us directly. With exclusive use of this facility, there's plenty of room to set up your gear for the best possible images. An on-site Polar Rover vehicle offers daily excursions to see polar bears and other wildlife farther afield. Our Expedition Leaders, all professional photographers and naturalists, are eager to share tips from their extensive experience to help you get those once-in-a-lifetime shots.

Compelling Reasons to Choose Our Tundra Lodge Photo Trip

With the advent of digital cameras, nature photography has never been easier – and it's a passion that fits beautifully with all we offer as the world’s top nature travel company. Our photography-specific tours get you within close range of the planet’s most captivating wild creatures, with expert guidance from our professional photographer-naturalists. And when it comes to Churchill polar bear photography, no one accomplishes this as well as we do, via the exclusive use of our custom Polar Rovers and mobile accommodations placed directly within the bears' habitat: the world-famous Tundra Lodge. If getting once-in-a-lifetime polar bear photos is your dream, whether you're a professional photographer or a keen amateur, here are some important things you should know before you select a polar bear photography adventure:

  1. The Tundra Lodge Offers the Best Polar Bear Viewing on the Planet!
Each fall, we roll this unique accommodation – for our use alone – onto the tundra in a strategic spot where polar bear density is highest. Here on a spit that juts out into Hudson Bay, the ice starts to freeze first, attracting polar bears from the very outset of the season to this private location that only we have access to! The Tundra Lodge provides surprising comforts, like a gourmet kitchen, a double-wide lounge area with sliding windows for 24/7 photography, and individual sleeping cabins (much like train berths) that provide each guest with a private window from which to watch bears and, if we're lucky, the northern lights. There's no more comfortable way to observe polar bears around the clock!
  2. We Hold Exclusive Permits for the Best Bear-Viewing Area
There are just two operators in Churchill granted permits to roam the entire Wildlife Management Area where the best (and often only) polar bear viewing occurs. Naturally, Natural Habitat possesses this special permit. Other companies with restricted permits use buses that travel the road to Halfway Point, which, as the name suggests, is just halfway to the best polar bear observation area. If your goal is to get great polar bear photos, you must choose a program that offers far superior viewing opportunities.
  3. Our Polar Rovers: The Most Remarkable Vehicles on the Tundra
The original tundra truck was invented 30 years ago, an exciting concept that has been significantly improved upon since. Our partner in Manitoba – a world-renowned specialty vehicle designer and builder – has created a superior new vehicle called the Polar Rover, which we use exclusively. It's driven by a cutting-edge drive train that safely allows us to cruise the tundra with effectively no chance of breakdowns. With a specially designed heavy-duty suspension system that creates a surprisingly smooth ride, and flush toilet facilities (rather than unpleasant drop buckets), our guests travel in exceptional comfort and safety. See more details on our Polar Rovers.
  4. Steel Mesh Platforms for Close-Up Bear Viewing
Innovative steel-mesh flooring built within the rear viewing platforms of every Polar Rover and between cars on the Tundra Lodge allows us to watch polar bears from literally inches away! Since curious bears often wander up right below us, many guests claim that this feature provided the highlight of their trip.
  5. The Smallest Groups for the Finest Nature Adventures
One of the most important features of any great nature adventure is a limited group size. By holding our groups to approximately 16 guests aboard each Polar Rover (the vehicles are designed to hold 30 or more), we ensure that every traveler has plenty of space for gear, to move about, angle for photos and enjoy personal time viewing the bears without the intrusion of other travelers.
  6. Private Chartered Planes for Maximum Polar Bear Time
To enhance our time on the tundra rather than at the airports navigating security screenings, we charter our own private airplane to fly us directly from Winnipeg to Churchill at our convenience. We’d rather spend our time watching polar bears, not sitting around in airports!
  7. The Finest Naturalist Guides on the Planet
Natural Habitat is known worldwide for the highest-quality guides in the industry. Our Polar Bear Photo Expedition Leaders have been guiding bear tours for an average of more than 10 years each.  They have the benefit of in-depth annual training, including additional resources provided by WWF scientists at the forefront of polar bear research. Additionally, our photo tour leaders also are professional photographers, with a passion for sharing their knowledge with our guests. Our philosophy on this is simple: a nature adventure is only as good as the guide, so we simply must provide the best! See Photo Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  8. Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Special Polar Bear Experience
With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee that clearly states that we will meet the high expectations we set in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  9. Feel Good About the Way You Travel
We all care about the planet, and you can travel with us knowing that the emissions from your trip are 100% carbon-offset. Natural Habitat Adventures is the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company, a feature that is particularly important when considering that polar bears are under major threat from climate change.
  10. Natural Habitat Adventures is World Wildlife Fund's Travel Partner
Because of our commitment to environmentally friendly travel, as well as the exceptional quality of our adventures, World Wildlife Fund, the world's leading environmental conservation organization, has named Natural Habitat as its worldwide travel partner, a designation that makes us exceedingly proud!
