Dave Luck

Growing up in Zambia, Dave developed a passion for the wilderness, learning how to survive in harsh environments, tracking animals and accompanying anti-poaching patrols to combat elephant and rhino poaching in the wild Luangwa Valley. He spent his early guiding days in Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park and the Okavango Delta in Botswana where he managed various safari camps and also captained a houseboat dedicated to wildlife viewing. Dave has traveled extensively in southern and central Africa, including Madagascar and the Seychelles. In Malawi, he managed a lakeside lodge specializing in unique kayaking trips and scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters.

Dave has led privately guided photo safaris throughout southern Africa for many years, assisting both amateur and professional photographers in their quest to capture outstanding wildlife images. Dave's images have been published in Harper’s magazine (UK) and Wilderness Safaris brochures and have been used by the Botswana Tourism Board in their marketing. Dave has worked alongside and consulted with fellow photographers Art Wolfe, Bobby Haas, Michael Poliza, Dana Allen and Chris Johns. He was a finalist in the Veolia Environment Photographer of the Year competition.

As a Natural Habitat "Hall of Fame" Expedition Leader, Dave has led adventures to varied nature destinations worldwide, including Wapusk National Park on Hudson Bay in the Canadian subarctic to search for polar bears, to Uganda to track gorillas and chimpanzees, and to Tanzania during the great wildebeest/zebra migration. In addition to being one of Africa's most respected safari guides, Dave has also has been involved with the "Children in the Wilderness” program – a grassroots environmental education project founded by Paul Newman. When he's not out guiding safaris, Dave's passions include photography, mountain hiking and biking, scuba diving in the Indian Ocean, and fly-fishing.

Praise from Natural Habitat Travelers:

“I have read other comments about Dave and it is hard to top them. Dave was extraordinary in every way: intelligent, interesting, informative, creative, supportive, positive, patient, caring, sincere, engaging, humorous, talented ... I can't find all the right words. He must be one of your top guides because he knew everything across a broad scope. Dave is a renaissance man and a true gentleman. I look forward to touring with him again.”

C. Gibson
“This was my 4th trip to Africa and I can honestly say I learned more and had more fun than ever before. Dave took care of every detail and assured each person had a unique and rewarding trip. His expertise in the field and with photography was awesome! His passion for wildlife was inspiring. “

A. Linder
“Dave was fabulous! Dave's knowledge of the animal's behaviors and his ability to anticipate their behavior, helped us be prepared to capture some wonderful photos. He was persistant and thorough while on the game drives, following tracks and making great effort to find the animals that he knew were around the area. Each of our game drives were more successful than the one before it, because of Dave's expertise.”

L. Bolick
“It was obvious when we arrived that everyone at the various camps were happy to see Dave, always a good sign! Dave was an outstanding guide and leader, I learned more on this trip than on all the others combined (and this was my 4th safari). He was knowledgeable on so many subjects - mammals, birds, flora, astronomy, history, photography - you name it. He was absolutely fantastic!”

E. Eng
“This was an exceptional trip led by a truly exceptional guide, Dave Luck. But you probably already know that. He made the trip so much more than I expected. I've come away with an emotional connection to environmental responsibility and respect for nature and animals. Dave is knowledgable about animals and nature and generous in sharing that knowledge. He proved himself skilled in tracking animals, repairing boat motors, driving in rough terrain and answering all of our ignorant inquiries. At the same time, he is respectful of everyone's feelings and preferences. I feel truly lucky to have had him as our tour leader.”
