Secluded Botswana Photo Safari

A Small-Group Photography Adventure into the Remote Southern Africa Wilds
Botswana is an epic safari destination for nature photographers. Boasting an extraordinary amount and diversity of wildlife, Botswana's celebrated reserves offer an experience of genuine African wilderness far from crowds. We take advantage of classic tented bush camps in especially remote and isolated locations to enhance the authentic ambience. Head out at sunrise to capture shots of lion and cheetah hunting in the cool of the morning on the Linyanti savannas. In the swamps of the Okavango, witness an amazing array of birds—and crocodiles! Photograph herds of elephant and hippo massing along the Chobe River to drink at the end of the day. Secluded Botswana will exceed every wildlife photographer's wildest dreams.

Trip Highlights

  • Stay at small tented camps within private reserves for exclusive photo encounters with Botswana's prolific wildlife—guided by our expert photographer-naturalist
  • Capture aerial images of wildlife via helicopter flightseeing over the Gomoti River, and photograph some of Africa's largest elephant herds as we cruise the Chobe River
  • Explore the canals and lagoons of the Okavango Delta by poled canoe to capture images of rare birds, hippos, crocodiles and perhaps even predators ashore
What Makes This Photography Safari So Much Better?
For the ultimate Africa photography safari, Botswana has few rivals. More than 40 percent of the country is protected within national parks and game reserves. Visitor numbers are limited, ensuring the best wildlife-to-traveler ratio in Africa. And animals are prolific in Botswana’s varied ecosystems, allowing for exceptional close-up photography. Yet, not every safari operator offers the chance to take full advantage of these elements the way we do. Here’s why you’ll get better photos when you travel with us:

  1. Maximum Group Size Just 8 Travelers
Our exceptionally small group means quiet, intimate encounters with wildlife. You won’t have to jockey for position to get great photos. And you’ll have the close attention and personalized photography guidance of our Safari Expedition Leader every step of the way.
  2. An Open "Window" Seat for Everyone
Nothing is more important on a photography safari than being sure you have access to the edge of the vehicle for unimpeded camera access. The private state-of-the-art safari vehicles we charter have open sides (no glass to interfere with your view) and 10 cushioned passenger seats—one in front next to the driver, followed by three rows of three seats each—though we limit our capacity to just 4 travelers in each vehicle on wildlife drives, for maximum comfort, viewing and photo opportunities. This means plenty of room for all your gear, too.
  3. A Superlative Itinerary for Photography
Our itinerary has been designed in conjunction with World Wildlife Fund to provide a secluded opportunity to photograph Botswana's abundant wildlife and diverse scenery...far from tourist crowds. Unlike standard trips, we stay in remote places where the proximity to wildlife is exceptional.
  4. Helicopter Flightseeing Included for Aerial Photography
Anyone who's had an aerial view on an African safari will tell you there's nothing like photographing wildlife on the move from on high. And on this trip alone, we've included an exciting helicopter flight over the Gomoti River and vast Okavango Delta—one of the richest wildlife enclaves in all of Africa. The Gomoti River is a year-round lifeline for animals, and the mosaic of habitats you'll survey from the sky provides ample food for a large array of grazing species and the predators that pursue them.
  5. Maximize Photo Opportunities on Private Reserves
Rather than staying in more heavily visited national parks, we concentrate on private reserves where access and visitor numbers are strictly limited. Our secluded accommodations in the Linyanti and Moremi regions are set amidst a profusion of wildlife, offering outstanding close-up photography, as well as the chance to shoot photos at sunset when the light is best— other groups must be back at camp by sunset due to national park regulations.
  6. Explore on Foot
Some of our best photo opportunities may be "smaller ones," and there's no way better way to get close to Africa's subtle wonders than on foot. In private reserves we are able to take intimate photography-focused bush walks in the company of our guide, which are not available to most safari-goers who stay within the confines of the public reserves.
  7. Private Verandas for Personal Wildlife Photography
Our luxury safari camps have individual verandas for guests to enjoy a private view of the African wild, with photography possibilities right out the front door of your tent.
  8. Chartered Flights
Charter flights (rather than long drives over rough dirt roads) between most safari locations allow us to spend more time actually taking photos on safari, rather than in tiring transit.
  9. The World's Finest Naturalist-Photographer Guides
Our guests enjoy the personalized service of some of the best-trained, most experienced naturalists in all of Africa – who also happen to be some of Africa’s top photographers! Your Safari Expedition Leader will accompany your group from start to finish, always at the ready with tips and pointers on how to get the best possible photographs, while also sharing expert interpretation and attending to your every need. NHA Safari Expedition Leaders average 15 years' guiding experience, with additional training and resources provided by WWF’s top scientists. See Photo Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
