Kenya Migration Photo Safari

Capture Iconic Images of Africa on a Safari Designed to Enhance Your Photography Skills
Kenya has long been Africa’s most storied safari destination. Known for its legendary wildlife and evocative landscapes, Kenya offers the photographer countless opportunities to capture iconic images of Africa: Graceful giraffes browsing in acacia trees. Elephants traversing the savanna. Stealthy lions stalking gazelle. Proud Maasai bedecked in ceremonial beadwork. And, perhaps most notably, the Great Migration, a chance to photograph hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra thundering across the plains, with predators in pursuit. Concentrating on private reserves, we avoid the more heavily visited parks, guaranteeing an authentic safari experience reminiscent of Kenya in days gone by. Our small groups and intimate luxury camps ensure personal attention, exceptional comfort, and a safari in which wildlife truly takes center stage.

Trip Highlights

  • Our Safari Expedition Leader, an expert naturalist and photographer, helps guests capture amazing images of Kenya's legendary wildlife and landscapes
  • Get superb close-up shots from our open 4x4 vehicles, with window seats for all and plenty of room for gear
  • Photograph the migration from within a private Maasai Mara conservancy and within the Mara reserve itself, for a range of perspectives
On Our Kenya Migration Safari, You'll Get Better Images
An African photo safari is surely a highlight of any nature photographer’s travel resume. And of all the safari options out there, an opportunity to witness and photograph the Great Migration may be the pinnacle! Imagine close-up shots of thousands of wildebeest and zebra clattering over the plains, followed by a phalanx of predators—wildlife photographers won’t find a greater thrill! But choosing a migration safari isn’t easy, since many companies simply add the word “migration” to their trip name in hopes of conjuring images of prolific wildlife viewing. In reality, they visit crowded parks, use cramped vehicles, stay in big lodges rather than remote luxury camps, and rely on mediocre guides. The result is a sub-par experience that hinders the opportunity to get the iconic shots that wildlife photographers dream about. We want you to realize your wildest dreams—that’s why our trips are different:

  1. Fewer Travelers = Better Photos: 9 Guests Total & 3 Max Per Vehicle!
Our small groups—with a maximum of just 9 guests—ensure a highly personalized safari experience. With just 3 guests per vehicle (sometimes fewer), everyone has a window seat and plenty of space for gear. There’s room to spread out and angle for perfect shots as we encounter scene after scene of wildlife drama.
  2. Personalized Photography Coaching From an Expert Professional
Your Natural Habitat Photo Safari Expedition Leader is intimately familiar with the Kenyan bush. Years of guiding have given your leader an intimate knowledge of animal behavior. Couple this with superb photography skills, which your guide is passionate about sharing with guests, and you’ve got a photo safari that’s second to none.
  3. Private Reserves Offer Superior Wildlife Viewing
By avoiding heavily visited national parks in favor of private conservancies with strict guest limits, we maximize wildlife encounters and increase our proximity to the migration. Private reserves also permit bush walks and night drives in search of nocturnal species—privileges not allowed on public lands.
  4. Small Luxury Camps Situated for Seclusion
Most visitors to Kenya stay at large, impersonal safari lodges where wildlife viewing happens in the presence of numerous vehicles. This is even true of most photography-focused safaris. Our intimate bush camps offer a compelling contrast, where the only crowds are crowds of animals! Isolated within the wilderness yet offering exceptional comfort, our luxury camps ensure personalized attention.
  5. Private Mobile Camp in the Maasai Mara
In the famed Maasai Mara National Reserve, we stay in our own private mobile camp with access to an exclusive campsite near the Mara River wildebeest crossing during the migration. Our luxury tented camp is situated in a remote and secluded spot where wildlife is abundant and tourists less so.
  6. The Most In-Depth Migration Itinerary
Some “migration” safaris spend only a day or two among the vast herds. We spend eight full days at the height of the migration, maximizing every chance to photograph the animals in a variety of settings and behaviors. This immersive experience also affords plenty of time to focus on other wildlife, too—as well as colorful cultural visits with local Maasai communities.
  7. Wildlife Photography Even in Nairobi
In Nairobi, we get a jump-start on wildlife photography with a stay at The Emakoko, a new luxury safari lodge overlooking Nairobi National Park. Though we’re on the edge of the city, wildlife here is plentiful, and we’ll enjoy an early-morning safari drive before our departing flight to the bush.
  8. Fly to and from the Bush
Many safari companies transport you to and from the Maasai Mara from Nairobi by vehicle—meaning long, dusty drives over rough roads. We fly both ways, maximizing time for what you have come to Kenya for: wildlife viewing on safari!
  9. Carry up to 80 Pounds of Luggage
We have arranged for extra space on board our charter flights so our photo safari guests have an 80-lb. luggage limit, far more than almost every other safari company out there. And the gear flies with us rather than traveling overland, which can cause damage due to extreme road conditions.
  10. The World's Finest Naturalist Guides
Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the finest naturalists on the planet! In Kenya, rather than using less qualified local camp guides at each stop or an inexperienced safari guide as a trip escort, our NHA Safari Expedition Leaders are the most highly trained guides in Africa, and equally devoted to providing highly personalized service. On our photo safaris, our guide is also an expert photographer, constantly by your side to help you get the best possible pictures. With our groups from beginning to end, our Expedition Leaders average more than 15 years' guiding experience each, and their training is further enhanced by WWF’s premiere scientists. Our philosophy on this is simple: an African safari is only as good as the guide, so we must provide the very best! Check out our Photo Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments about them.
