See the Terracotta Warriors and Encounter Imperial China in this Ancient Silk Road City
Day 1: Chengdu / Fly to Xi'anTransfer to Chengdu airport for a morning flight northeast to Xi'an, the ancient Chinese capital rich in a thousand years of history under ten dynasties. Our local guide meets us on arrival and accompanies us to our hotel. Our first encounter with the ancient walled capital of China is an afternoon stroll through the Muslim Quarter – Xi’an has one of the world’s oldest Muslim communities, founded some 1,300 years ago by Persian and Arab traders who traveled the Silk Road and settled in the then-capital of China's Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Known as Hui, their descendants are deeply integrated into local life but preserve separate cultural and culinary practices that fuse Central Asian and Chinese traditions.
We'll also visit the Great Mosque located in the heart of the Muslim Quarter, a distinctive structure that reflects the integration of Islamic belief with Chinese architectural elements. The mosque features a series of courtyards built on a single axis, as well as intricate pavilions and pagodas, and is oriented on a westward line toward Mecca, unlike Buddhist temples that are typically aligned on a North-South axis. In the evening, enjoy a dumpling dinner at Defachang, a famous restaurant known for perfecting these filled pillows that originated in this region of central China.
Day 2: Xi'an / Beijing
This morning we see Xi'an's most famous sight, the Terracotta Warriors. Unearthed in the suburbs outside the walled city, the stone army comprises one of the most remarkable archeological discoveries in history. Consisting of 8,000 life-size soldiers, 100 chariots and 600 horses, none of which is identical, the army was built to guard the remains and massive mausoleum complex of Qin Shihuang (259-210 BC), the first emperor to unite China. This pivotal and controversial first emperor forged a handful of warring states into a unified China and began construction of the Great Wall. Despite drawing many curious visitors, this UNESCO World Heritage Site exudes a charged silence.
Our visit to the Terracotta Warriors includes special access to the museum’s lower deck, typically only open to China’s government officials and premiers. We’ll have 20 minutes of uninterrupted private access in this lower area to see the warriors up close. Afterward, we'll have lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to the airport for our return flight to Beijing. On arrival we transfer to our hotel, conveniently located at the Beijing airport. Dinner this evening is on your own.
Day 3: Depart

Studies suggest that two-thirds of the world’s polar bear population could be gone by 2050. And if current warming trends continue unabated, WWF scientists and other researchers believe that polar bears may disappear altogether within 100 years. WWF is intent on preventing this from happening.
