Uganda Mountain Gorilla Extension

Track endangered mountain gorillas and sit with them in their wild rainforest habitat!
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe / Lake Mburo
You are met on arrival at the airport and transferred to the Lake Victoria Hotel, where we enjoy an early lunch among the hotel's tropical garden setting. We then drive on paved roads to Lake Mburo National Park, passing through papyrus swamps near Lake Victoria, tracts of tropical rainforest, and the rolling plains of Ankole cattle country. Lake Mburo is a mosaic of habitats, including an extensive wetland that's home to a multitude of birds including the famous African shoebill. Overnight at Mihingo Lodge.

Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Our day begins with a game drive in Lake Mburo National Park in search of classic African wildlife. We then drive southwest into a region of striking scenery, traveling through high hills and deep, largely cultivated valleys. The road is paved for half the drive, then turning into an all-weather dirt road. Ascending into ever-lusher, more mountainous terrain, we enter the forest and arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This World Heritage Site is one of the world's most famous destinations for for gorilla trekking, and we may catch our first glimpse of mountain gorillas right on the grounds of Gorilla Forest Camp, where we will spend the next three nights.

Days 3 & 4: Gorilla Trekking
After breakfast, we make the short drive to park headquarters where we meet our expert local guides and trackers, who give us an orientation on our trek ahead and the etiquette of spending time among the gorillas. From here, we move on foot into the dense emerald forest, following our trackers as they pursue the gorillas' movements from where they were seen the night before, and pursuing them from that point. Locating the gorillas can take as little as 15 minutes, to several hours, if they have been on the move, and our trek may involve climbing to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. The terrain is rough and at times muddy, though the rewards are profound. Although the hike can be physically demanding, the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make it worthwhile, even en route. Once the gorillas are located, all fatigue is forgotten, and the experience is often described by our guests as the most profound natural nature experience they have ever had.

Day 5: Lake Mburo National Park
We re-trace our route today to Lake Mburo and the respite of Mihingo Lodge.

Day 6: Entebbe / Depart
Our journey continues to Entebbe, about a 5-hour drive. If time permits, we may stop in Kampala for shopping and lunch and a visit with the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers. Our adventure concludes at the airport, where we arrive to connect with departing flights.
