This adventure does not require a high degree of physical fitness. We will spend most of our time exploring the canals by boat, spending up to 3 hours at a time sitting in the open sun. There are some short walks as well as the option for a 2-mile hike over uneven terrain which may be muddy or slippery. Those who opt to add a Turtle Tour must be prepared to spend up to 3 hours walking on the soft sandy beach after dark. Travelers should be aware that the heat and humidity may be very high. Roads may be bumpy on our way to Tortuguero.
Important Information About This Trip
Late June through mid October is the Green Sea Turtle nesting season in Tortuguero and an excellent time to visit. Guided trips to see the nesting turtles will be available upon arrival at an additional cost, but cannot be booked or guaranteed in advance. Turtle Tours are available in the evenings, with two departures per day, and can be booked at the lodge reception desk for approximately $35 USD per person (prices may change without notice) and can be paid for with US dollars, Costa Rica colones, Visa or MasterCard.
Since the areas we travel to on this extension are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for this program. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat, we require that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We recommend that your chosen independent insurance plan includes at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage. Please note that we will add the cost of Natural Habitat’s medical evacuation policy to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, phone number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
To protect your investment and to provide peace of mind while you travel, we also strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. Plans may cover everything from medical treatment to trip cancellations and delays, to lost luggage. Please contact our office if you would like more information about the medical evacuation or comprehensive travel insurance policies we offer through Travelex by calling 800-543-8917.
