Complement Your Safari with an Extension to the Unspoiled Indian Ocean Coast!
Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg
Transfer to the Southern Sun O.R. Tambo International hotel.
Day 2: Johannesburg / Rocktail Bay
Fly to Richards Bay and then transfer by road to the Rocktail Beach Camp where you will have a chance to relax and explore the beach and surrounding environs. This beautiful camp is nestled among the lush Maputaland Coastal Forest covering ancient coastal dunes and is comprised of seventeen tented rooms with en suite restroom facilities. There is also a lounge/pub and dining area with a large wrap around veranda as well as a swimming pool and sun deck affording stunning views out to the ocean for those who want to relax around camp.
Days 3 & 4: Rocktail Bay
The activities at Rocktail Bay are many and varied. The diving and snorkeling here are excellent and the camp has its own full service dive center that also caters to the casual snorkeler (fins, masks, and wetsuit are available for a minimal charge). The area is known for its pristine reefs, excellent visibility and diverse marine life, including whale and ragged tooth sharks, turtles, dolphins and reef fish. The height of turtle activity occurs between October and March. During this time, guests can choose to participate in evening turtle drives on the beach and can even assist with a fascinating ongoing research project designed to help conserve the massive leatherback and loggerhead turtles that come ashore here to nest and lay their eggs each year. There is a good chance to see humpback whales migrating along the coast from April through October with June, July and August being the peak months. Other popular activities include visiting the local community, where guests can see how people live as subsistence farmers, visiting local hippo pools, nature walks where the area's unique flora and fauna are explored, fly-fishing and simply relaxing on the beach or in a hammock with a good book.
Day 5: Rocktail Bay to Johannesburg or Cape Town
This morning you will be transferred by road to Richards Bay Airport, where you will connect with your onward flight to Johannesburg. You may also want to consider spending a night at nearby Ndumo Lodge, one of South Africa's most acclaimed birding destinations and a great place to see both black and white rhino and other big game species.
