Machu Picchu Active Adventure
Explore the Sacred Valley and Hike the "Inca Trail Express" into the Lost City of the Incas!
Machu Picchu is a must on any active adventurer's itinerary, and there's no more exciting way to encounter the ancient Lost City of the Incas than on foot, over a portion of the original Inca Trail. High in the Andes, the ruins rest amid knife-edged ridges draped in emerald jungle. Hidden to western explorers until 1911, when a local Quechua guide led Yale historian Hiram Bingham to the site, the marvelous Inca city was mesmerizing, even in its dereliction. Built on a granite mountaintop close to the sun, its intricate stone architecture reveals the ingenuity of its 15th-century designers. Far below, the Urubamba River rushes through a green gorge into the Sacred Valley. Our journey also includes a tour of Cusco, the once-gilded capital of the Inca Empire, and Ollantaytambo, an Incan royal estate whose ruins offer fascinating grounds for exploration.
