For polar bear travelers who want to see as much as possible during their time in Manitoba, we offer a guided Extra Day in Winnipeg program. It takes place prior to each polar bear tour and includes hotel accommodations, breakfast and lunch, a tour of the city highlighting historical and cultural points of interest, and a guided visit to the acclaimed Manitoba Museum, winner of numerous awards for excellence in visitor experience and service.
Location of Adventure
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
If your Extra Day in Winnipeg program occurs during the month of October, we will visit FortWhyte Alive in addition to the guided museum and city tours. At this 640-acre nature reserve located just outside the city, our adventure begins with an up-close encounter with North America's largest land mammal, the bison. Aboard the park's new mini bus, we join an interpreter to explore the bison prairie, learning how this magnificent animal has shaped Manitoba's history. Our tour continues with a gentle walk through accessible wetlands and forest to spot a wide variety of waterfowl, songbirds and birds of prey that call the area home. Learn the difference between "dabblers" and "divers" from the comfort of a sheltered birding hut. To round off the experience, we'll see endangered burrowing owls, a charming species that has flourished in the park's highly successful breeding program.
If your Extra Day in Winnipeg program takes place in November—typically a colder and snowier time of year—we've planned a special indoor program to keep you warm, dry and entertained. In addition to the guided museum tour, our program includes “Inuit: People of the North,” a seminar designed to provide an understanding of the history and traditional lifestyles of these indigenous Arctic dwellers. We will also visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which opened in 2014 to tremendous national acclaim. It is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. Here we will explore all 11 galleries during our guided journey through a variety of compelling human rights stories.
Participants in our Extra Day in Winnipeg program should arrive in Winnipeg at any time one day prior to the regular listed departure date for your polar bear tour. The program will conclude in time for the 7 pm welcome dinner on Day 1 of your adventure.
