Physical Requirements
This adventure requires no specialized skills or substantial physical prowess, but general fitness and mobility are essential to participate in and enjoy this trip. To participate in all activities, you must be able to swim short distances, paddle a kayak, climb stairs and walk unassisted over uneven terrain for a minimum of two miles. The trip includes three nights on a remote offshore island where you can expect rustic simplicity and shared bathrooms.

The ATM Cave excursion involves hiking, swimming and some climbing and travelers must be in decent shape to undertake it. You will hike for 45 minutes over rough, uneven terrain, cross three streams on foot, swim into the mouth of the cave, and wade through ankle- to chest-high water before climbing into a labyrinth of dry chambers. Several short- to medium-length walks are included over rough, potentially slippery, uneven rain forest terrain with some steep inclines.

The itinerary also includes three full days of kayaking, with paddling excursions typically lasting 2-3 hours. While extensive kayaking experience is not required, it is important that you are confident you’ll enjoy three full days on the water, as it is a central focus of this trip. Snorkeling is optional but highly encouraged, to experience the full wonders of the reef. When we tour Mayan ruins sites, you will have the opportunity to climb the structures. Many of the areas we visit offer little shade or protection, and you will exposed to the full intensity of the weather conditions. For your safety, please note that our activities do require a reasonable degree of physical fitness, mobility and balance. While all activities are optional, should you opt out of the day’s scheduled activities, we cannot always guarantee that alternatives will be available. Travelers should be aware that the heat and humidity may be very high and roads may be bumpy.
Important Information About This Trip
Belize is a tropical paradise with rainforests that are home to colorful birds and exotic animals, and a coastline famous for its spectacular barrier reef, teeming with fish. The weather is sub-tropical, with temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and tropical rains are possible at any time. Along the coast, where the temperature can rise into the 90s, frequent ocean breezes cool the air. On this adventure, we provide all sea-kayaking equipment, including boats, paddles and safety gear. We can also provide snorkeling gear on request, including fins, snorkel and mask, but we suggest that you bring along your own mask and snorkel for optimal fit. The ocean temperature is a pleasant 75 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit (24-29 degrees centigrade), so you only need a body glove if you get cold easily.
Mandatory Insurance
Since the areas we travel to on this trip are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for our guests' safety. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat, we request that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We will add the cost of a medical evacuation policy to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, contact number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
