The Most Immersive Galapagos Itinerary Available!
The Galapagos Islands are a “must-see” destination for any nature traveler. But how you see them is another question altogether. The vast majority of those who visit the Galapagos do so aboard cruise ships with dozens (and dozens!) of other passengers, all going ashore together and exploring in large groups. For more adventurous travelers who prefer an active experience focused on nature rather than fellow travelers, this trip offers a secluded, eye-level encounter with the Galapagos. In fact, with our kayaking permits and small group size, this active Galapagos adventure is truly in a class by itself. Here’s how:
- Kayaking Permits = An Exceptional Itinerary
Through permits originally arranged by Dr. Olaf Malver, Nat Hab's Chief Exploratory Officer who pioneered kayak expeditions in the Galapagos years ago, we have permission from Galapagos National Park for guided kayaking exploration that goes far beyond the standard land- and sea-based excursions most Galapagos visitors participate in. Kayaking lets us discover the water and shoreline at eye-level — this, and our unparalleled experience in Galapagos kayaking, is our key to ensuring the most immersive Galapagos adventure available!
- The Smallest Group in the Islands
With a maximum of just 12 guests plus Natural Habitat's highly trained Galapagos Expedition Leader, this trip boasts the smallest group size offered by any major Galapagos tour operator. And that's all the more vital when considering the up-close wildlife experiences we enjoy on this unique itinerary.
- Personal Snorkeling Experiences
With inquisitive sea lions, sea turtles, dolphins and playful penguins abundant in the islands' waters, there's no place on the planet better suited for wildlife snorkeling encounters than the Galapagos. If you're traveling on board a large ship, it can thus be disappointing to enter the water only to find yourself surrounded by more snorkelers than local creatures. With our 12-guest maximum, your secluded snorkeling encounters are guaranteed!
- An Active Itinerary Shaped By World Wildlife Fund
As WWF’s travel partner, we are privileged to work with some of the world's most accomplished environmental scientists to develop the best nature travel adventures possible. This small-group itinerary, arranged in conjunction with WWF, features walking, hiking and kayaking excursions for close-up wildlife viewing in the most personalized manner.
- Hiking & Kayaking Throughout Our Entire Itinerary
We don't wait till we get to the islands to get out into nature. Our outdoor adventure kicks off in Quito with a privately guided hike in the foothills of the Andes. We then enjoy the thrill of specially permitted explorations in the Galapagos by kayak and on foot, getting a perspective on the islands' flora and fauna that simply can't be attained without such special access.
- The World's Finest Naturalist Guides
Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the finest naturalists on the planet. In the Galapagos, our group of elite Expedition Leaders each average more than 15 years' guiding experience and receive additional resources from WWF’s renowned scientists, an advantage that further enhances our guests' experience. See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
- The Best Gear for Comfort & Safety
If you've ever tried kayaking in basic (cheap) kayaks with subpar equipment, you'll surely agree that it is uncomfortable and, frankly, not very fun. Since Nat Hab Expeditions has pioneered many nature trips by kayak around the world, we know what equipment is required for the best kayaking experience...and we've invested in that equipment specifically for our guests' comfort and safety. You can count on us.
- Our Quality Guarantee Ensures Your Special Galapagos Experience
With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee: that we will meet the lofty expectations we establish in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.

Physical Requirements
This trip is rated
Moderate to
Difficult
General physical fitness and mobility are essential to participate in this trip, as well as some prior experience with kayaking. Activities include mainland and island hiking, kayaking, swimming and snorkeling. The location of our pre-cruise accommodations on the mainland is at 9,000-9,500 feet in altitude, and some walking on a steep hillside between individual guest rooms and the lodge is necessary. Our mainland cloud forest hike is approximately two miles long at 5,500 feet in altitude. Our island hikes in the Galapagos are often on trails that are rough and uneven, sometimes traversing lava fields and navigating sharp or slippery rocks. Constrained by the nature of the park trail systems and the size of the islands, most of our hikes will be from one to one and a half miles long. When weather and conditions permit, our trip will include five opportunities for sea kayaking, each outing about two hours in length. Some prior paddling experience is required, as a couple of these excursions require some technical knowledge to navigate through breaking waves and rough water. Most activities on this trip will range in length from one to three hours, and we will often have several activities in one day while in the islands. Travelers are not required to participate in every activity.
Important Information
There is perhaps no more appropriate destination for nature travelers than the Galapagos Islands. With rare and friendly wildlife in abundance, the islands exhibit the wonder and intricacies of nature in a remarkable setting. Our highly trained Expedition Leaders are on hand to help bring it all alive in a personalized manner. The key to the success of our Galapagos adventures is our small group size—we boast one of the lowest guide-to-guest ratios of any operator in the islands. The
Nemo II, our intimate sailing catamaran, accommodates just 12 guests plus our Expedition Leader and sailing crew. This trip is the most unique Galapagos experience available for travelers who are interested in (and physically capable of) getting "out there" on foot and by kayak. In addition to land-based and paddling excursions, we'll have the opportunity to snorkel almost every day while in the islands— a major part of any comprehensive Galapagos experience. It will be a top highlight, for certain!

Getting There & Getting Home
Arrive in Quito, Ecuador, anytime on Day 1 and depart anytime on Day 11. In order to avoid the long transfers between the city and the airport at the conclusion of the trip, some guests opt to forego their final night's stay in Quito and connect to departing international overnight flights on the same day we fly from the Galapagos Islands back to the mainland. In order to ensure that guests make their same-day connection, travelers who choose this option will have to remain at the Quito airport in between flights. We will offer a discount to your tour price if we are advised at least 45 days prior to the start of your trip that you will not require use of your final night’s hotel. We can best serve you if our Natural Habitat Adventures Travel Desk makes your reservations, as we are intimately familiar with the special requirements of this program and can arrange the most efficient travel. Please call us at 1-800-543-8917. Note that while we offer you the best possible rates available to us on airfare and additional nights' accommodations, you may find special web rates or better fares online.
