Physical Requirements
Moderate to Difficult
In order to participate fully in this trip, you must be able to kayak a minimum of 2.5 hours per excursion and walk unassisted for at least 2 miles over rough and uneven terrain. Our multi-sport Croatia and Montenegro itinerary features sea kayaking, snorkeling and hiking at a beginner level: kayaking takes place in mostly protected, calm seas (as long as we have good weather) and hiking on easy to moderate well-groomed trails. Though no paddling experience is required, general fitness and mobility are essential to participate in this trip, and it will be helpful to know in advance that you are physically able to kayak the minimum daily distance and actually enjoy kayaking before signing on for this tour. Also, several nights will be spent sleeping aboard a catamaran, so please keep this in mind if you are susceptible to motion sickness, though generally we anchor in protected bays and coves.

While on the boat, a typical day starts with a morning kayak excursion (1.5 to 2.5 hours) followed by a picnic on the beach, or lunch aboard the boat or at a local restaurant, then kayaking again in the afternoon. We can often swim right off the boat whenever it is anchored. The kayaking distance paddled each day will depend on local weather and sea conditions. We typically expect to paddle no more than three hours at a time; however, if adverse conditions such as strong winds and currents impede our progress, we may need to paddle for longer periods. For the majority of the time our catamaran will be nearby while we are paddling, so if you wish to opt out and return to the boat, that is usually a possibility. (There will be one day where it will not be possible to return to the boat while we are paddling, but you may remain on the boat if you choose instead.) Based on varying physical abilities of participants, note that our Expedition Leader may re-assign kayaking partners in an effort to keep the group together.

Walks ashore in Croatia and hikes in Durmitor National Park are arranged to maximize viewing of historic sites and scenic landscapes. They typically last from one to three hours, and may be modified based on physical ability.

Travelers are not required to participate in all excursions and may choose to remain on the boat or at the hotel if they feel unable to participate or would just like to relax. Unfortunately, since visitors to some of the islands must be escorted by a guide, it is not possible in most cases to simply go ashore and wait on the beach for your group.
Important Information About This Trip
Your safety while on the water is of prime concern. Toward that end we provide the very best equipment, using rigid plastic sit-in sea kayaks—stable, seaworthy craft specifically designed for ocean environments. By using double kayaks, we are able to balance the group with respect to paddling power and experience and enhance our group's ability to stay together, although a limited number of single kayaks are also available for those who choose. Sturdy, well-functioning plastic paddles are also provided, though you may bring you own paddle if you wish. We also supply personal flotation devices and safety gear. All trips begin with a comprehensive paddling introduction from the guides. During this orientation guides review equipment, safety measures and rules, demonstrate paddling strokes, and discuss rescue procedures. All participants are expected to help launch and beach the kayaks.

Our expert Expedition Leaders are thoroughly trained in emergency first-aid techniques and have extensive experience in this environment. Ultimately, our Expedition Leaders and boat captain make decisions with everyone’s comfort and safety in mind, while trying to maximize the adventure experience for each individual. We must stress that listening carefully to your Expedition Leader's instructions and directions is ultimately your responsibility and in your best interest and that of the group.
Mandatory Insurance
Since the areas we travel to on this trip are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require medical evacuation insurance for our guests' safety. If you decline the medical evacuation insurance coverage offered by Natural Habitat, we request that you send us documentation of the independent coverage you have selected. We will add the cost of a medical evacuation policy to your tour invoice until you provide our office with proof of coverage including your insurance company's name, contact number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that our policy exists exclusively in the interest of our guests' safety.
