Croatia & Montenegro: An Active Adriatic Adventure

Paddle & Hike the Sun-Soaked Dalmatian Coast & Wild High Country of Durmitor National Park
With more than 1,200 islands and reefs along the Dalmatian Coast, plus inland national parks that rarely receive visitors, Croatia and Montenegro are an ideal destination for the nature traveler seeking a more remote experience of Europe. Via kayak and on foot, we'll revel in the best scenery in the Mediterranean, with rocky headlands, sandy beaches, turquoise bays, and red-roofed towns that cascade to the sea. Our base in Croatia is a deluxe private sailing catamaran from which we launch our kayaks at a new destination each day, navigating intimate coves and grottoes and exploring ashore on foot. Dubrovnik and the villages of ancient Dalmatia are a highlight, too – cultural and architectural treasures as seductive as the landscape and sea. But we don't stop there: this unique adventure also includes two days in Montenegro's Durmitor National Park, hiking amid lakes, mountains and some of the deepest gorges on earth, and kayaking in stunning Kotor Bay.

Trip Highlights

  • Sail the Adriatic aboard our private catamaran—an exclusive, small-group adventure for just eight guests
  • Kayak among forested isles and turquoise coves along a coastline steeped in history, with some of the best local food and wine in the Mediterranean!
  • Hike and paddle little-traveled Montenegro, from the lakes and canyons of Durmitor National Park to the dramatic Bay of Kotor
What Sets this Adriatic Adventure Apart from the Rest?
The Dalmatian Coast is one of the world’s most up-and-coming travel destinations. Yet our multisport itinerary is an exclusive small-group experience in “hidden” locations you won’t find on any conventional tour. For that reason—and these below—you should make this trip your choice if it’s a unique active nature adventure you’re seeking!

  1. Travel with Just 8 Guests!
Our very small group offers an intimate opportunity to explore more remote locales and stay in places that larger tour groups and cruise ship passengers will never see.
  2. A Private Catamaran Offers Flexibility and Seclusion
We sail aboard a beautiful new catamaran that offers us freedom to explore Croatia's coast away from tourist crowds, with access to smaller islands and hidden coves that larger ships can’t reach. When we’re traveling from place to place, our guests can relax on deck, rather than inside a bus. With just eight passengers aboard, we enjoy an intimate environment that feels like a private yacht—because it is!
  3. We Pioneered Sea-Kayaking Trips in the Dalmatian Archipelago
Natural Habitat Expeditions' CEO (Chief Exploratory Officer) Olaf Malver pioneered guided yacht-based sea-kayaking trips in the islands off the Croatia coast, starting in 1995. We have more experience with paddling tours here than anyone else, which means we’ve been able to hone our itinerary and operations over the years to provide a superlative experience!
  4. Varied Activities for a Truly Diverse Adventure
We’ve crafted this unique itinerary to feature the perfect mix of active pursuits and cultural encounters, for the most well-rounded experience of Croatia and Montenegro you’ll find anywhere! Croatia has become very popular—that’s why we go to less-visited areas of the Dalmatian Coast. While we don’t skip major highlights, such as Dubrovnik’s Old Town, our focus is on smaller locales where you’ll meet local people, not other travelers. And we include Montenegro, which is just coming onto the radar of travelers looking for less-discovered destinations. As an ideal counterpoint to paddling Croatia's idyllic coast, we hike amidst the peaks, plateaus and deep gorges of Montenegro’s Durmitor National Park, far from the typical tourist track.
  5. Fabulous Food and Wine
In contrast to cruise ships that ply the Dalmatian Coast or bus tours that dine at nondescript hotels, our smaller, more local approach means local food and wine, too—and these are a real highlight! We savor meals that feature fresh fish caught daily, locally grown fruit and vegetables, artisan cheeses and olive oil, home-baked bread, and locally produced wines. If you’re an adventure traveler who’s also a bit of a gourmand, this trip will delight all your senses, including taste!
