Why Choose Natural Habitat for Your Greenland Adventure?
While Greenland is still a very out-of-the-way destination for adventure travelers, several operators who run trips here, most based aboard small cruise ships. Though any experience of Greenland is sure to be exciting, we’re convinced that more intrepid travelers should embrace the raw beauty and allure of this Arctic wilderness under their own power in a very small group.
Learn more about what makes our Greenland expedition so distinctive:
- An Exclusive Itinerary — We Go Where No One Else Does
Natural Habitat Expeditions is the world’s only company to offer this unique itinerary into exceptionally remote realm known for its huge icebergs, whales, and views of the Greenland Ice Cap. While other outfitters offer Greenland expeditions, none have the experience and safety expertise to lead groups into the single most impressive portion of Greenland's legendary east coast: the mighty Semilik Fjord complex.
- An Expeditionary Point-to-Point Route
Our itinerary is a classic “A-to-B-style" expedition, a point-to-point journey of discovery that encompasses a variety of Arctic landscapes from the outer fjord system near the Denmark Strait to the intricate maze of inlets near the Ice Cap. Rather than returning to the same base camp each night, our linear route allows us a more diverse and thorough encounter with the region as we anticipate what lies ahead at each turn.
- A Small-Group Wilderness Immersion
We take a maximum of just 12 travelers — and for groups larger than six, we travel with two Expedition Leaders, ensuring a strong commitment to safety and a high level of personalized attention from your guides. To experience Greenland’s dramatic coast in this manner, rather than with a hundred or more other guests all going ashore in motorized Zodiacs, is a markedly different experience. Furthermore, our trip requires no cooking assistance from guests—our high guide-to-guest ratio means our leaders take care of KP duty.
- Round-Trip Helicopter Flight from Kulusuk to Tasiilaq
Here's a Nat Hab exclusive: To expedite our arrival on Ammassalik Island and the start of our hiking and paddling expedition, we fly via helicopter from Kulusuk to East Greenland’s small administrative capital of Tasiilaq. It’s a faster and more reliable mode of transportation than going via boat, and it offers a great chance to spot whales from the air.
- A Taste of Contemporary Greenland Culture
We are the only sea kayaking outfitter that spends a night going and coming in Tasiilaq, the remote capital of far-flung East Greenland. Here, we’ll enjoy an encounter with Tasiilaq's people and culture and learn about their history with a visit to the town’s museum. Most visitors never get to Tasiilaq; our overnight stays afford an opportunity to meet the locals, appreciate their traditions, and gain insight into the challenges and rewards of life in modern Greenland.
- Unmatched Depth of Greenland Guiding Experience
Our company and guides have more East Greenland kayaking experience than any other outfitter in the world. Our CEO, Chief Exploratory Officer Olaf Malver, pioneered commercial paddling trips on Greenland’s east coast, and we’ve been leading expeditions here since 1988, including many historic “firsts.” No one matches our depth of experience when it comes to keeping our travelers safe. These are potentially dangerous waters, with strong currents and laden with ice—highly experienced kayaking guides are essential, and our Greenland Expedition Leaders are the best in the business. We know that a nature adventure is only as good as the guide at the helm, so we’re committed to providing the very best! See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
- The Best Expeditionary Equipment
As part of our unwavering commitment to safety and comfort, we use the best and most up-to-date expedition kayaks available on the market, as well as top-of-the-line safety gear, tents and camping equipment. Our gear is meticulously maintained, reducing the chance for unexpected mishaps as we travel. When safety counts, only the best will do—and not every outfitter provides it.

Physical Requirements
This trip is rated
Extreme Adventure.
This expeditionary sea kayaking adventure has a flexible itinerary; the distance paddled each day depends on local weather and ocean conditions. We should expect to paddle not more than 5-6 hours each day, but if we have to struggle against the wind and current in order to reach a safe and optimal campsite for the night, we might have to paddle for longer periods. Generally, our paddling philosophy is not to “cover miles” for the sake of covering miles, but to follow an interesting route and explore as we go along, still keeping the end point of our journey in mind.
The hike we do on Day 2 is long and challenging, 7 to 8 hours (with lots of breaks), with part of our route cross-country over a trailless landscape—but the terrain is truly spectacular and worth every effort. The hike includes three easy river fordings and a 2,000-foot pass to ascend and cross. All other hikes on our itinerary take place from each day's beach camp, and all are optional.
This trip is not for people with back, shoulder or arm injuries, and we require that all participants have done some multi-day paddling trips previously. Our guides will help you improve your paddling techniques while we travel. You are not expected to be able to do a "Greenland Eskimo roll" in your kayak—the expedition-style folding kayaks that we use are exceptionally stable.
Important Information
There is no better way to see Greenland’s remote and stunning coastal wilderness than in a self-propelled manner—on foot and from the seat of a kayak. Our paddling route is a classic “Point A to Point B" journey that takes place in the inner fjord system, which is more sheltered and protected from ocean swells and waves. We paddle safely among icebergs and along the granite shores of rocky islands. On land, we hike in trailless country—over boulder fields, scree and snowfields. Our campsites are often on sandy beaches or grassy flats.
This trip is for those who want to experience the High Arctic at its purest—and this this can best be achieved as a band of adventure-seeking wilderness enthusiasts working as a team for a successful expedition. Participants are expected to pitch in with setting up tents, occasionally helping in the field kitchen, and carrying common gear from the beached kayaks to camp.
Please note: The itinerary provided is meant as a guideline and is subject to change without notice. On rare occasions, it may be necessary to deviate from our regular itinerary for reasons beyond our control. In these instances we will provide the best available alternative.
Getting There & Getting Home
Arrive at Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV), Iceland, on Day 1 no later than 9:00 am, and depart anytime from Keflavik International Airport (KEF) on Day 16. Please note that Reykjavik is the chief domestic airport 1.5 miles from the city center, while Keflavik, 30 miles out of town, is where most international flights arrive and depart from. Please be sure to allow enough time to arrive and transfer to Reykjavik Domestic Airport by 9:00 am; in some instances, a prior overnight stay may be required. We recommend arriving in Iceland 1-2 days prior to our trip departure date in case of unexpected travel delays.
