Hiking in the Footsteps of the Maasai

A Custom Private Trek With Maasai Guides in Kenya's Wild Loita Hills
You won't find a more unique African adventure than this combination of a custom trek in the Loita Hills followed by a private classic safari in Kenya's legendary Maasai Mara. Walk back in time as local Maasai tribesmen guide you through their homeland on foot, offering an intimate discovery of the forest, waterfalls and birdlife. Some 2,000 colobus monkeys roam the trees, and you may see elephant, buffalo, baboon, bushbuck, leopard and hyena. Donkeys carry your gear as we camp near natural springs and hippo pools. Follow it up with three days in the private Siana Conservancy, bordering the famed Maasai Mara, where we'll take safari walks and interact with the Maasai, then travel into the park itself to watch predators track large mammals. This is a rare adventure that will thrill even the most seasoned safari-goer!

Trip Highlights

  • Trek with your own private group through the remote forests of the Kenya's lush, little-known Loita Hills with resident Maasai guides
  • Explore two remote sectors of the Maasai Mara, home to Kenya's densest concentration of wildlife, including plentiful predators
  • Enjoy unparalleled seclusion at Leleshwa Camp within the private Siana Conservancy, for an exclusive experience of the 'hidden' Mara—without crowds
You Won't Find a More Unique & Authentic Experience of Kenya
Kenya is justifiably one of Africa's most popular safari destinations. So it can take some creative arranging to offer a Kenya safari that's truly original, with a chance to experience a slice of Kenya's nature and culture in a genuinely authentic manner. With our long-standing personal connections, we've managed to do just that—your party will trek in the company of Maasai guides who call this region home, and whose deep knowledge and warm hospitality will provide you a memorable encounter with Kenya not available on any standard safari. Add to this a private experience of the Maasai Mara, and you've got a truly peerless African adventure!

  1. A Rare Active Safari Opportunity
On most African safaris, guests are confined to vehicles the entire time. And while classic game drives are a thrilling and key part of any safari—including this one—active travelers often end up yearning for more physical activity. This, then, is the perfect combination: several days on foot for a vigorous yet quiet and highly personal experience of the Kenyan wilds, followed by outstanding wildlife drives in the legendary Maasai Mara.
  2. A Custom Small Group for Intimate Wildlife Encounters
Most travelers to Kenya end up on safaris in groups of 16 or 20 or more. With your own small private party, you'll get closer to wildlife in a quieter context, get better photos, and enjoy personalized interpretation from your guides. There's simply no comparison!
  3. A Private Reserve Means No Crowds & Exclusive Activities
Many Kenya safaris include the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the country's most famous wildlife park. And it's often crowded as a result. We get around that by showing you the "hidden Mara" on an adjacent private reserve, where you'll experience all of the wildlife without all the people. Within this private sanctuary you'll have opportunities for guided bush walks and night drives to see nocturnal wildlife, neither of which is permitted within the national park. And, when we do visit the park itself, we travel to a remote sector, exploring by day and returning to our private camp outside the park boundaries at night.
  4. Intimate Luxury Accommodations Offer Seclusion & Wildlife Proximity
Most visitors to Kenya stay at large, impersonal safari lodges where wildlife viewing happens in the presence of numerous vehicles, all clustered around the same animals. After your Loita Hills trek, you'll stay at Leleshwa Camp, our own remote luxury tented camp bordering the Maasai Mara. Leleshwa offers a peaceful and isolated experience of wild Africa, not to mention exceptional comfort and plenty of personal pampering.
  5. Travel with Some of Kenya's Top Guides
You simply won't find more outstanding guides than those that will accompany your private group on this custom adventure. Our Maasai guides are natives of the region through which we trek, having grown up on this land in families that have been at home here for generations. Their deep knowledge, good humor and personalized care for each guest will be highlights of your trip. Likewise, your veteran safari guides from Leleshwa Camp are among East Africa's best trained and most congenial leaders.
  6. A Window Seat for Every Traveler
In our custom Toyota Land Cruisers, everyone in your party has a window seat, easy access to roof openings, and room to angle for photos as we enjoy close encounters with Kenya’s diverse wildlife. It’s quite a contrast to the crowded mini-buses that ferry many Kenya safari-goers into the bush.
