Secluded Zambia Safari

An In-Depth Nature Adventure Into the Untouched Heart of Wildest Africa
Few places in the world remain as wild as they were 150 years ago, when explorers like David Livingstone ventured into lands that were terra incognita. And while Africa, like the rest of the globe, has become familiar, portions of it are evocative of that earlier era when the bush teemed with animals and a sense of nature’s immensity was palpable. That sense remains in Zambia. Nearly half the country is preserved in parks and game reserves, offering an unparalleled wilderness safari experience. Zambia, land of untamed rivers, thundering waterfalls and vast herds of game, is still for explorers.

Trip Highlights

  • Discover this less-traveled safari destination – far from the ordinary – highlighted by stays at small, nostalgic luxury bush camps in isolated settings
  • Traverse the game paths of the Luangwa Valley on legendary Zambia walking excursions and enjoy wildlife drives by 4x4 in Kafue
  • Enjoy the thrill of a balloon safari over the remote Busanga Plains, where you'll witness predators and prey engaged in a spirited coexistence
Zambia is Special — And We Make It Even More So!
In little-traveled Zambia, you can still capture the essence of the romantic safari era of days gone by. We explore remote sectors of the bush on 4x4 drives and on foot, for the fullest experience of Zambia's impressive wildlife. Learn more about why Zambia is such a rare safari destination, and why our Zambia safari is even more exceptional!

  1. A Maximum of Just 6 Travelers
While NHA groups are always small, this safari features an especially small group, a mere six guests accompanied by our Expedition Leader, to ensure safety in walking groups and enhance the intimacy of our encounter with the African wilderness. This also means a window seat for everyone on wildlife drives in custom 4x4 safari vehicles.
  2. The Optimal Zambia Itinerary
If you’re looking for remote, rarely visited safari locations, as well as a diversity of habitats and environments, you won’t find a more inclusive itinerary than this one. From the riverine reaches of South Luangwa to the wide-open plains of Kafue and the thunder of Victoria Falls, this Zambia adventure will fulfill any safari-goer’s dreams. Unlike other operators, we limit our dates to the peak wildlife-viewing season only. And, we explore not only by vehicle but also on foot, to view nature and wildlife from two very different vantage points. Add to this our small, remotely located camps, and you've got a matchless safari in a destination where few scheduled safaris are even offered.
  3. Traditional Walking Safaris in Little-Visited South Luangwa
Zambia is the home of the traditional walking safari, pioneered in South Luangwa, and we include several opportunities to experience this less-common means of exploring the bush. Short- to medium-length guided walks are customized according to group and individual interests, offering a welcome opportunity to encounter nature outside of a vehicle. Some of Zambia's best wildlife viewing happens in South Luangwa, including a chance to see two subspecies not seen elsewhere, Thornycroft's giraffe and Crawshay's zebra. Our small group of just six guests provides the quiet context for the optimal bush-walking experience. And, since larger groups cannot be accommodated in the tiny camps of the South Luangwa region, where most walking safaris take place, you won't want to miss this classic experience by selecting a large-group lodge-based trip!
  4. Small, Remote Luxury Safari Camps
In keeping with our emphasis on seclusion, wilderness and the character of a vintage safari era, we stay at intimate luxury bush camps that foster solitude and a sense of oneness with nature. Many of these camps accommodate just 6-8 guests, ruling out most scheduled safari groups that typically travel with 16 people. Despite their far-removed locations, however, comfort and quality are paramount. Guests who stay at larger lodges miss out completely on the untouched wilderness experience that only such small, exclusive camps can provide.
  5. Stay on the Busanga Plains in Kafue, with a Balloon Safari Included!
While most Zambia safaris include Kafue National Park, very few actually stay in the heart of the Busanga Plains, where wildlife is most prolific. We use the single small camp that's located here, while most groups stay outside the plains, away from the most interesting region of the park and the unique game found nowhere else in Kafue. And what's more, we include a hot-air balloon safari from camp! There's nothing like surveying the plains from the air, with a chance to witness thrilling predator-prey interactions.
  6. Legendary Safari Guides
Our guests enjoy the personalized service of Zambia’s most renowned and experienced Safari Expedition Leaders. Travel in the company of famed naturalist guides like Phil Berry, who pioneered the Zambian walking safari and has been instrumental in Luangwa conservation for more than three decades. Rather than using less qualified local camp guides at each stop, our Expedition Leaders are the most highly trained guides in Africa, averaging 15 years' experience, with additional training and resources provided by WWF’s top scientists. Our philosophy on this is simple: an African safari is only as good as the guide, so we must provide the very best! See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  7. Internal Flights for Comfort & Convenience
Rather than resort to long, rugged drives over rough roads to get from place to place, we rely on internal flights to seamlessly connect major itinerary stops. This way, we maximize your time on safari rather than in transit – and isn’t that what you’re coming to Africa for?
  8. Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Superior Zambia Safari
