Botswana Explorer Safari

A Classic Tented Safari that Reveals the Best of Remote Botswana
Days 1 & 2: Livingstone, Zambia & Victoria Falls
Our Botswana safari begins upon arrival in Livingstone, where we are met by a Natural Habitat representative at the airport and transferred to Toka Leya Camp. This afternoon we meet our Expedition Leader and the rest of our group. Toka Leya, overlooking the mighty Zambezi River, lies within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park near Victoria Falls. More than a mile wide, Victoria Falls is the most expansive curtain of water in the world, plummeting more than 300 feet into the Zambezi Gorge. The cataract’s local name, which the park shares, means “the Smoke that Thunders.” Activities include a tour of Victoria Falls, game drives in the national park, river cruises from camp and guided nature walks. We also enjoy good birding around camp. Several optional activities are available at an additional charge, including popular helicopter flights over the falls and elephant-back safaris.

Days 3 - 5: Chobe National Park / Linyanti Reserve
We travel by road and ferry over the border into Botswana and on to Chobe National Park, known for its vast elephant herds – a population that exceeds 70,000. On a boat cruise through the channels of the broad Chobe River we sometime see as many as 500 elephants in a single day! Water birds abound, including herons and storks, as well as hippos and crocodiles. This afternoon we fly by light aircraft to the private reserve of Linyanti, dramatic big-game country. This region is noted for its shifting landscapes and diverse habitats, from riverine to savanna, and forest to plains. The Linyanti’s perennial waters attract herds of wildlife that walk well-worn game paths to slake their thirst in the dry season. Predators follow in their footsteps, making for exciting game viewing.

Days 6 & 7: Southwestern Moremi Game Reserve
After breakfast, we depart the Linyanti Reserve by light aircraft for Xigera Island. At our private Expedition Camp, we find the ultimate experience of the Okavango Delta, where serene waters flow through a maze of channels around isolated islands, nurturing a profusion of plant and animal life. There is no better way to encounter the Okavango than by mokoro, the traditional poled canoe by which we reach our private island and secluded camp. Surrounded by permanently flooded delta, our island base is nestled in riverine forest, home to the elusive sitatunga antelope and Pel’s fishing owl. On mokoro safaris we encounter a diversity of birdlife, frogs and game species, some of which are specially adapted to water, like the red lechwe. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lion or leopard around our island camp.

Days 8 - 10: Okavango Delta
This morning we transfer by light aircraft to Seba Camp, set in a private concession bordering the vast Moremi Game Reserve and Okavango Delta. Seba Camp has been designed to blend into the ancient riverine forest of majestic hardwood trees such as sycamore fig and leadwood. Overlooking a perennial lagoon with prolific birdlife and resident pods of hippo, each of Seba’s tents has a private deck with magnificent vistas of the lagoon and a host of wildlife passing by. We expect to spot lion, territorial leopard, large herds of buffalo and ever-present elephant, as well as standard hoofed game including giraffe, zebra, red lechwe and impala.

Day 11: Maun / Home
Today, our Botswana safari comes to an end as we depart by air for Maun, where we connect with flights home.
