Indonesia: Raja Ampat & Asmat Villages

Explore Stunning Archipelagos & Reefs, with a Full Immersion in the Vibrant Asmat Culture
For the modern-day explorer, the tropical archipelago of Indonesia offers a sense of place as it must have existed a thousand or more years ago. This fascinating island realm is a montage of wild natural beauty, intriguing cultures and wondrous marinescapes. Underwater exploration on this voyage is exceptional, as we dive or snorkel over some of the most spectacular reefs in the world. Highlights include Bunaken National Marine Park, a World Heritage Site, plus three full days in the Raja Ampat archipelago within the fabled Coral Triangle, renowned for its diversity of marine life. On Zodiac excursions ashore, visit traditional fishing villages and encounter the mysterious world of the Asmat, whose customs and traditions have changed little over the centuries.

Trip Highlights

  • Snorkel or dive among 1,200 species of dazzling tropical fish and 600 species of coral in the Raja Ampat archipelago, which holds some of the greatest undersea biodiversity on the planet
  • Spend two days in the Asmat region of West Papua, where we meet elaborately decorated 'warriors' paddling intricately carved canoes and learn about their traditional culture
  • On nature walks through lush forests, search for colorful birdlife including bird of paradise, pink-spotted fruit dove, eclectus parrot, sulpher-crested cockatoo and helmeted friarbird
