The Red House
In Tasiilaq we stay at The Red House hotel, situated on a hill south of town with a fantastic view of King Oscar Fjord and the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The small hostelry is geared toward outdoor enthusiasts and functions as a community gathering place for guests and locals alike: hikers drop by to get information about activities, trails and weather; local Greenlandic neighbors stop to chat and play cards. The Red House offers simple double rooms that are functional and comfortable, with separate shared bathroom and hot showers. The hotel has central heating, hot and cold running water (a small luxury in Greenland), a sauna, and two lounges with a small library. On chilly evenings, everyone gathers round the fireplace and shares adventures from the day. Should the Red House ever be full - which certainly can happen, we will stay in nearby homes of local Greenlanders, where we will sleep on cots (2 to 5 persons in a room), with access to the Red House toilet and shower facilities.
