You’ll be accompanied by our special guests, plus a naturalist Expedition Leader who is an expert on Arctic wildlife and natural history, as we traverse the tundra in custom Polar Rovers in search of polar bears. In the evenings, gather for enlightening presentations on conservation, climate change, Arctic ecology and how polar bears may thrive into the future in this fragile northern environment.
Hear from Nat Hab founder Ben Bressler about 30 years of polar bear tourism in Churchill, and how our presence has contributed to a community commitment to protect the bears. Brad Schallert, Deputy Director of International Climate Coordination for World Wildlife Fund, will speak on sustainability challenges and achievements in a warming North. And New York University Professor Paul Romer, co-recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics and former chief economist for the World Bank, will share an inspiring vision of how technological innovation can, in conjunction with government policy, create long-term sustainable economic growth while addressing the imperative to slow climate change. “Humans are capable of amazing accomplishments if we set our minds to it,” Romer said at a news conference following the award announcement. And that may be our best hope for the welfare of polar bears.
This special departure also includes a visit to the Churchill Northern Studies Center, a field station focused on scientific and social research and experiential education in the subarctic. Situated on Hudson Bay at the intersection of three different biomes—marine, boreal forest and tundra—the center is optimally positioned for the study of these important northern habitats. The center occupies a LEED Silver facility, which we’ll tour.
If you’re a traveler who’s especially curious, engaged and passionate about issues of global sustainability, if you care deeply about protecting northern ecosystems and their wild inhabitants—including polar bears—then this exclusive experience is for you!
