Spot Prolific Wildlife While Exploring the Jungle-Fringed Canals & Trails of Tortuguero
Days 1 & 2: Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica
After breakfast on the final day of our Family Costa Rica Adventure, travel through some of the planet's densest and most species-rich rain forest in Braulio Carillo National Park. The terrain is home to 500 species of birds, including resplendent quetzal, bare-necked umbrella birds, flame-throated warblers and long-tailed silky-flycatchers, plus more than 150 species of mammals including howler monkey, tapir, jaguar, ocelot and peccaries. Making our way to the coast, we stop in Limón to board our boat for Tortuguero National Park—a region considered by many to be the best place to view wildlife in all of Costa Rica.
The area protected by Tortuguero National Park was an archipelago of volcanic islands that filled in with sand where the river met the sea, forming a network of marshy islands. This is how the turtle nesting beaches of Tortuguero formed, making a home for green sea turtles, leatherbacks and hawksbill turtles which can be visited with a guide under the illumination of starlight. Tortuguero's freshwater creeks and lagoons are home to seven species of river turtles, spectacled caiman, southern river otters and over 50 species of freshwater fish. Spend two days enjoying private boat cruises along natural canals that wind through the dense jungle. Here in the tropics, steady sunlight, constant rain and warm
temperatures create an intense incubator for a profusion of species. Our explorations may reveal howler monkeys, spider monkeys and white-faced capuchins, tree sloths and a spectrum of colorful birds. In the evenings, return to Evergreen Lodge for delicious meals and the comfort and seclusion of your jungle cabana.
Day 3: Tortuguero / San José / Depart
After enjoying a final morning amid the sights and sounds of the jungle, we depart by plane for San José to connect with homeward flights.
