Itinerary
Upon arrival in Nairobi, transfer to The Emakoko, a small elegant lodge built into the side of a valley on the Mbagathi River bordering Nairobi National Park. Enjoy a cocktail overlooking the river, followed by a relaxed dinner at the lodge—or perhaps a light meal if you're arriving late. In stark contrast to the loud bustle of the city, fall asleep to the sounds of Africa: you may hear a lion
Day 2: Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Center & Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
Make an early morning game drive into Nairobi National Park on the city's outskirts. On this vast tract of grassy plains, you may see towering giraffe juxtaposed against high-rise buildings in the distance. Among the acacia forest, look for endangered black rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and more than 400 bird species.
Continue your Nairobi exploration with a leisurely lunch among the largest display of wildlife bronzes in Africa at Matbronze Cafe before a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, the former Kenyan home of the Danish author who gained fame for her memoir Out of Africa, in which she relayed a story of life on the coffee estate in the early 20th century. Next, we head to the famous Giraffe Center, established to protect the endangered Rothschild's giraffe found only on East Africa’s grasslands. The Giraffe Center leads environmental education programs for Kenyan youth and has been responsible for introducing several breeding pairs of Rothschild Giraffe into Kenyan national parks. You’ll get up high on platforms to engage eye-to-eye with these gentle giants—and the chance to feed them makes for memorable photos.
If time permits, you’ll have an opportunity to shop for local handicrafts before visiting the Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The trust's pioneering elephant and rhino rescue and rehabilitation program has made it a leader in wildlife and habitat conservation in East Africa. Capture photos of heartwarming interactions at the elephant nursery during a quiet evening hour as the young elephants return to the stockades for the night. You will return to The Emakoko in time to meet your Expedition Leader and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner marking the start of your Kenya Migration Photo Safari.
