We’ve added a third conservation expert to round our Great Amazon River Cruise departures this fall.

Eric May will join the October Great Amazon River Cruise departure.

Eric May will join the October Great Amazon River Cruise departure.

Eric May, a program officer for WWF’s Latin America and Caribbean Program, will join our October 30-November 7 Amazon River Cruise as a guest lecturer.

In his role at WWF, Eric works directly with field offices throughout Latin America on program development and implementation. He currently focuses on the final phase of a 10-year tri-national program in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru called Amazon Headwaters Initiative. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to ensure the protection and consolidation of the southwestern headwaters of the Amazon Basin by preserving large expanses of forest and freshwater habitat. This in turn will maintain “an interconnected matrix of land uses that are compatible with conservation,” May says.

May is also engaged in mining issues in Latin America, specifically artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Peru, which is a growing threat to critical ecosystems and water supplies throughout the Amazon.

In addition to his professional endeavors, May is an avid outdoorsman and says he spends as much time as possible in the woods or on the water. He is a Virginia native and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Virginia.
