David Kasura

David Kasura is Leleshwa Camp’s head guide. With 16 years’ guiding experience under his belt, he still finds every day in the bush with his safari guests as exciting as the first.

David’s passion for safari guiding began early, in the context of his large family. Growing up with seven brothers and one sister, a meal on the table was a blessing. Like many Kenyan families, David and his siblings had their fair share of chores, and he spent much of his childhood outdoors herding the family goats and cows. He learned to dream out there on the plains, and unbeknownst to him then, nature would have a continuing influence on his life.

His elder brother’s job with a nearby safari lodge proved a critical influence. Growing up near the Maasai Mara reserve, his brother had seen many local boys employed by safari camps and companies, and when it came time to assist his parents with paying his siblings’ school fees, he, too, turned to the safari business for a position.

During the school holidays David would leave his goats behind to visit his brother instead. Keeping himself as inconspicuous as possible, David found himself in awe of the safari guides, their stories and their camaraderie. He would wait with anticipation for the vehicles to return to camp, knowing that each evening around the campfire in the staff quarters, the stories from the day would flow, and with them, David’s mind would soar. He knew his calling in life.

David worked hard at school and performed well, but his heart longed to be in the bush. So against his parents’ wishes he left school, and with the help of his brother, David attained a job as a trainee guide at a large lodge deep inside the Maasai Mara. He couldn’t learn quickly enough from the senior guides, perpetually asking questions, and each night, by the light of a paraffin lantern, he consumed every wildlife book he could get his hands on.

His knowledge and growing experience eventually led to the passage of his Bronze guiding exam and the realization of his childhood dream of becoming a full-fledged safari guide. Sharing experiences in the bush with his guests is what David continues to love best.

David’s employment with Natural Habitat Safaris was the result of a conscious decision he made to move from big camps, because he preferred higher-quality, small-group safaris rather than less-personal experiences that included few intimate wildlife encounters. Ultimately, he landed at Leleshwa Camp, Natural Habitat Safaris’ own tented camp in the private Siana Conservancy on the edge of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Today he is head guide at Leleshwa and looks forward to the day when he sees the twinkle in the eye of the next generation of safari guides across the campfire.
