Andy Corbett

When that African bug bit Andy, it bit hard. Growing up on a farm in county Wicklow, Ireland, Andy’s father was passionate about the great outdoors and passed this onto his son. In true Irish style Andy spent all his spare time surrounded by nature, and whether it was horse riding, hunting or fishing, his interest in wildlife was ignited.

Influenced by a childhood immersed in nature, Andy made a natural progression to a degree in marine biology and oceanography. While he was at university Andy first traveled with his family to Kenya and instantly fell in love with it all: the expanse of the land, the wildlife and the culture. He vowed then and there to return and combine his degree, his love of wildlife and the outdoors to pursue a career as a safari guide.

Degree in hand, Andy left the grey drab of the UK, swapping it for South Africa where he fol¬lowed his heart, enrolling in various guiding courses. Just two years later, he graduated from the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa as a full-fledged Level 2 guide. Honing his skills further, Andy went on to gain accreditation as a trail guide and remote medic as well as his advanced rifle handling certification.

Returning to Kenya in 2004, Andy cut his professional guiding teeth at Cottars 1920s Safari Camp deep in the heart of the world-renowned Maasai Mara Game Reserve. In addition to fulfilling his vow to return, working at Cottars provided Andy with invaluable experience for his first foray into guiding. Given the Mara’s prolific wildlife, especially carnivores, Andy had a superb opportunity to fine-tune his study of mammal behaviour and tracking, a skill he has continued to develop.

Wanting to expand his guiding horizons, Andy started working with Joe Charleson at East Africa Safari Ventures, where he guided camping safaris all over Kenya. By 2008, Andy had become director of Leleshwa Camp. Still passionate about guiding, as camp manager Andy furthered his role into hosting guests and mastering the day-to-day running of this popular tented camp, experience that would further help advance his safari career.

Though combining his extensive knowledge of animal behaviour, his love of the outdoors, and his interest in photography, Andy has also become an accomplished photographer. His ever-expanding portfolio of work features subjects from the savannahs of Africa to the glaciers of Alaska, and he loves sharing photography tips with his safari guests.
