The Ultimate Churchill Adventure

A Total Immersion into the North, Including Dogsledding and a Helicopter Journey to the Bears’ Dens
Sunrise and sunset are ethereally beautiful events in the tiny grain port of Churchill, Manitoba. As the sun rises, prepare to head out and see some polar bears! Our famous Polar Rovers were designed with one purpose in mind: to allow you to safely and comfortably explore this extraordinarily harsh environment and come face to face with bears.Leave your cell phone at home and concentrate on the massive, powerful life-forms in front of you. Polar bears are one of the two largest land-carnivore species. Can you name the other one?No aspect of your trip is more important than the quality of your guide. Our Expedition Leaders are specially selected for their naturalist knowledge and winning personalities. Except for this guy — just kidding! The Polar Rovers are heated and equipped with flush toilets for maximum comfort and convenience. But be sure to step outside occasionally to the viewing platforms to phototgraph the bears from all vantage points.Polar bears hunt seals from a sea-ice platform. Today, climate change is the polar bears' main threat — a diminishing ice pack could spell disaster for them. Each season the tundra takes on different colors and unpredictable weather. Some seasons it snows early and often; other seasons early snows are blown away and a final freeze does not occur until December. We never know when it will snow, but the beauty of the ever-changing tundra will be revealed upon arrival. The snowy owl is diurnal (most active during the day), so there's a good chance you'll see one while out on the tundra. This owl is one of more than two hundred bird species found in the area. The red fox lives in a variety of habitats, including the tundra. When sharing territory with the Arctic fox, the red fox is dominant and will not hesitate to kill its rival. You've come to Churchill to see polar bears. Sometime it seems the polar bears have come to see you!An acute sense of smell enables a polar bear to locate prey even when it is hidden by snow drifts or ice (or even when you have a Snickers bar in your left-front pocket and half a fruit roll-up in your backpack). After the incredibly lovely tundra sunsets, you'll head back to town for evening presentations by local people and your Expedition Leaders. On one morning, you'll get to experience one of nature's greatest thrills: a helicopter journey to the female bears' denning area. From the air, the tundra appears quite different. You may also see caribou, Arctic fox, wolves, and ancient native sites.Like all bears, mother polar bears are extremely protective of their cubs, taking extra care to stay away from large males.Polar bears build their maternity dens in the snow. The cubs are born in November or December and remain in the den until March or April. You may have an opportunity to actually crawl into a den! Some of your most exciting views of the tundra will come from behind a team of energetic canines. These endearing and eager sled dogs never fail to win hearts. You'll have plenty of time to visit, photograph, and learn about the dogs from an expert musher.A break in the clouds can mean Northern Lights — for hours or just seconds. If you're in Churchill on a clear night, you’ll travel just outside of town to watch them from the comfort of heated, aurora-viewing domes.During the optional Extra Day in Winnipeg Extension, take in the sites of the city, including a trip to the natural history Manitoba Museum, considered to be one of Canada's finest.Natural Habitat Adventures' Expedition Leaders are chosen not only for their knowledge of Arctic ecosystems, but also for their patience and love of people. Let them guide you through an "ultimate" Northern experience!
