Tundra Lodge Adventure

Stay at the Northland’s Most Remarkable Lodge, Specially Designed for Polar Bear Observation
Polar bears roam the outskirts of Churchill, Manitoba, until the Hudson Bay turns to ice. They then head across the tundra to the frozen waters to hunt for their primary food source: seals. The Tundra Lodge, a mobile facility with private rooms, is strategically positioned in the best area for viewing polar bears and other wildlife. The lodge provides an extremely comfortable and unique way to experience the magic of the North. Imagine writing in your travel journal, "Woke up on the tundra. Polar bears outside the window."Your Expedition Leader is constanly on the lookout for bears. Living in the Tundra Lodge puts you right in the middle of the action. Each season the tundra takes on different colors and unpredictable weather. Some seasons it snows early and often; other seasons early snows are blown away and a final freeze does not occur until December. We never know when it will snow, but the beauty of the ever-changing tundra will be revealed upon arrival. In addition to watching bears on the tundra, you'll take part in all kinds of activities and hear informative presentations.Inquisitive bears often approach the lodge, which is equipped with plenty of windows and several fenced observation decks to accommodate your own curiosity.Since the lodge has lots of common space — a lounge with sofas and chairs, as well as a dining car, each with sliding windows — photographers will have ample room to shoot at will. You may see young bears play-fighting, mother bears protecting their young, or giant adults patrolling the shores as they wait for the bay to freeze. Thanks to our talented chef, meals in the lodge consistently garner the highest praise on trip evaluations. As if that weren’t enough, coffee is continually brewing and snacks are always available. In addition to the bears you’ll see hanging around the lodge, you’ll also search for wildlife using the heated vehicles — with onboard flush toilets — devoted exclusively to Tundra Lodge guests.Large tires raise the polar rovers to a safe height for bear viewing. Outdoor platforms are made of steel and bring you into close range of the curious bears. The Arctic region is rich with history, culture, and — sometimes — lichens! Your Expedition Leader is an expert in the natural wonders of this remarkable region.Always keep your camera ready on this adventure — you're often in the right place at the right time. The habitat of the Arctic fox spans from coastal to inland tundra areas. Your chances of seeing one near the Tundra Lodge are good!Spotting these snowy-white creatures in their white world is always memorable. Arctic foxes are also commonly seen scavenging behind polar bears. What's the name of that bird you heard this morning? The snowy owl is also known in North America as the "Arctic owl" or the "great white owl." Listen for its call.Back in the lodge, your Expedition Leader will lead in-depth discussions and conduct daily lectures on timely issues, such as climate change. If the night is clear, prepare to be dazzled by the sight of northern lights dancing overhead. The view from the remote Tundra Lodge is unimpeded by the manmade lights of Churchill.A helicopter trip is an optional addition to your itinerary. The view from above may allow you to see many more bears, often mothers and cubs. Although dog-sled racing gets a lot of publicity and is seen now as the primary form of mushing, recreational dog sledding is gaining popularity. You can give it a try yourself while in Churchill. It is a moving experience to witness these beautiful dogs doing what they love. Tundra comes from the Finnish word "tunturi," meaning "barren land." A true appreciation for anything that survives here is gained once you've experienced the tundra firsthand.
